Barbie's Back

Mark Smith - Saturday December 1

Winless in six starts since capturing the Listed Calaway Gal Stakes at Doomben last December, the odds-on favourite Outback Barbie was all out to run down a determined Jami Lady in Saturday's Listed BRC Mode Stakes (1200m) at Doomben to credit Eureka Stud's high-flying Spirit of Boom with a 1-2 finish.

Ridden by Jim Byrne for trainer Tony Gollan, Outback Barbie defeated the freewheeling Jami Lady by three-quarter of a length with Churning (Lonhro) a half-neck back in third.

Third behind Sunlight in the Magic Millions 2yo Classic, Outback Barbie was competitive in five races in Sydney in the spring including placings in the Group II Percy Sykes Stakes and Group II Silver Shadow Stakes. She advances her record to 2 wins, 1 second and 2 thirds from 8 starts with earnings of $428,200.

"It is well documented that she has been unlucky. But she showed today what she can do and she can now press on into the summer triple crown races," Gollan told AAP.

"I think the 1400m of the Magic Millions Guineas next month will be perfect for her. There isn't much of her but she is all heart,"

"They are running quick sectionals today so to come from off the pace was a good effort."

Outback Barbie (pictured as a yearling ) is now likely to clash with the undefeated  Zoustyle (Zoustar) in the Gold Edition Stakes at Doomben in a fortnight.

The daughter of Spirit Of Boom was a $210,000 Magic Millions purchase for Alan and Jennifer Acton from the Eureka Stud draft and was the most expensive yearling from the first crop of her sire.

She is the first foal of stakes-winning General Nediym mare Pure Purrfection, a half-sister to stakes-winner Global Warming.

Eureka Stud will offer a filly by Written Tycoon out of Pure Purrfection (Lot 33) at the upcoming Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

Spirit Of Boom has 17 lots catalogued for the Gold Coast in January, a surprisingly large draft of 21 at the Inglis Classic and nine at the Inglis Premier.
