The top bets from Clinton Payne for August 16

Clinton Payne - Tuesday August 15

It's a strong card on Wednesday at Canterbury and I'm heading into the meeting with the confidence levels high.

UP 'N' ROLLING (Canterbury Race 3 No 5)
This looks the ideal race for this talented former Kiwi to kick off his campaign. When you look at the eight runners in the race six are at their level and there are only two with upside – Up 'N' Rolling and Notio. Notio is going well and last time chased home Saturday's winner Special Missile but he's drawn a tad awkwardly in this and it's likely he'll need to circle them while Up 'N' Rolling resumes and has drawn the inside gate. Chris Waller has given him two trials this prep compared with one last time and his first-up run in the previous campaign was good over 1600m in similar grade to this, but a race that had more depth. I think he's a genuine Saturday class horse and if he is, he should take care of these with even luck.

LUBITON (Canterbury Race 5 No 1)
Smart mare that was competitive in some strong three-year-old fillies' events during the autumn. She kicked off that campaign with a three length fifth at set weights behind Global Glamour and Foxplay in the Light Fingers before finishing a close second to Dawn Wall in the Keith F Nolan Classic. Her trials leading up to this campaign have been every bit as good as they were leading into her previous campaign and this is a significantly easier target than what she resumed in last prep. Barrier 1 ensures a cushy run either in front or on the back of the speed and with the 3kg claim she's well weighted against horses that mostly are midweek standard.
