Snitzel's $15 million Man Redzel Goes Back to Back in The Everest

Mark Smith - Saturday October 13

Triple Crown Syndications Redzel took his earnings to a staggering $15,372,000 when defending his crown in Saturday's $13 million in The Everest (1200m) before 40,000 fans at Randwick.

With Kerrin McEvoy again in the saddle, the Peter and Pail Snowden-trained gelding dominated the race from the front on a rain-sodden surface to defeat Gerald Ryan's Trapeze Artist (Snitzel) by one and a quarter lengths with the James Cummings-trained Osbourne Bulls (Street Cry) finishing down the outside fence, one and a half lengths back in third. The result wasn't without drama as Redzel was cast in his box on the eve of The Shorts and was scratched. He then finished out of a place in the Group II Premiere Stakes at Randwick at his most recent start.

"People wrote him off but I think it's all about knowing and believing in your horse," Peter Snowden said.

"You don't ever give up in this sport, that's how we treat everything.

"Don't throw the toys out of the cot, don't throw yourself down, just try to do your best to get things back on track again.

On whether he would set Redzel for a third try in the world's richest race on turf, Snowden said.

"I'll have to, I'll have no choice, he is a gelding."

The race was a triumph for Arrowfield Stud's champion stallion Snitzel who picked up $8.1 million for first and second, a total that would have made him the champion stallion of the season not so long ago.

Redzel advances his record to 14 wins, 6 seconds and 1 third from 28 starts with earnings of $15,372,000.

A $120,000 purchase by Triple Crown Syndications from the draft of Marquee Stud at the 2014 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling sale, Redzel is the tenth living foal and second stakes-winner, after the Group III winner Danerich, for the former top-class Rubiton mare Millrich.

Winner of the Group III Sweet Embrace Stakes, Millrich was placed in the Group 1 Golden Slipper, Group II Silver Shadow Stakes, Group II Magic Night Stakes and Group II San Domenico Stakes.

A sister to the dam of the talented El Roca (Fastnet Rock) Millrich died three weeks after foaling Redzel.
