Champion Stakes Goal for Poet's Voice Colt

Mark Smith - Friday September 14

The powerful Godolphin stable is building a formidable record in the Group III NJC Spring Stakes (1600m) at Newcastle winning with Sweynesse (Lonhro) in 2014 and Astoria (Medaglia d'Oro) 12 months ago.

Two runners carried the royal blue silks in Friday's renewal and for a long while it looked like the stable's second choice Cloak (Medaglia D'Oro) would carry the day for Glyn Schofield.

Then Tye Angland manoeuvred the promising Poet's Voice (GB) colt Aramayo to the centre of the track to come with a barnstorming finish to win running away by a length from his stablemate with Greysful Glamour (Stratum) three-quarters of a length back in third. (photo Steve Hart)

After breaking his maiden over 1550 metres at Canterbury on September 8, the James Cummings-trained colt earned a shot at this Group III feature with a close-up fourth in the Ming Dynasty Quality (1400m) at Rosehill Gardens three weeks later.

"Every run he's had he has put in for us, he's very genuine, stable representative Darren Beadman said.

"James said before the race if he runs well or wins he will go for the (Spring) Champion Stakes or maybe the Dulcify.

"He had to do it the hard way, he3 had to circle the field but the speed was genuine and he's certainly got a mile and a quarter written all over him."

Aramayo is a half-brother to five winners including the Group 1 Australian Derby runner-up Tupac Amaru (Street Cry) and the stakes-placed Chachapoyas (Medaglia d'Oro).

He is the final foal of the imported Diktat mare Peruvian (GB) who died in March last year.

Peruvian (GB) is an unraced half-sister to Group 1 Breeders' Cup Turf Stakes, Group 1 Epsom Coronation Cup and Group 1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud winner and successful sire In The Wings as well as well as Group II winner Morozov and Hunting Hawk and the Group III winner Hawker's News.
