Golden Slipper Winner She Will Reign Retired

Breednet - Wednesday August 15
Gary Portelli's 2017 Golden Slipper winner She Will Reign has been retired.

She Will Reign and trainer Gary PortelliDarby Racing, who had such a wonderful ride with the star filly announced via twitter the retirement late on Wednesday.

"It's with a heavy heart that on behalf of the ownership group  and Gary Portelli we announce the retirement of our superstar filly She Will Reign.

"Mild inflammation was discovered in her lower airway and the group decided to put her 1st and retire. What an extraordinary filly and ride"

It was only yesterday Gary Portelli reported to Racing NSW Stewards that She Will Reign was found to have blood present in one nostril when inspected at the stables last Saturday.

Portelli had told stewards "the results of a lung wash performed on the mare yesterday (Monday) will be available later today (Tuesday) to ascertain if the blood present was as a result of external trauma".

She Will Reign was the fairytale winner of the 2017 Golden Slipper as the cheapest horse in the race, having been purchased for just $20,000. She was sold to an overseas buyer for an undisclosed sum earlier this year with the intention to keep racing through the 2018 spring before being retired.

Her career record was 12 starts for six wins, two at Group I level with the Slipper being complimented by the Moir Stakes at Moonee Valley.

She won just over $3.2m in prizemoney with her last start being when sixth in the Missile Stakes behind Pierata earlier this month.
