Adam Crettenden's call of the Elephant & Castle Handicap at Geelong last
Friday; that BM70 contest won stunning style by a son of one of Victoria's most
reliable stallions - Larneuk Stud's in-form O'Lonhro.
Despite facing a rise in class, the Mervyn McKenzie trained A Good Yarn was sent out an odds-on favourite at his seventh start and he was never in any danger of defeat despite being taken on early.
But he was quick to shake off the
challengers and he was in a race of his own in the straight; his winning margin
a soft six lengths that so easily could've been double that.
"He was going that easily," McKenzie enthused, adding that "he
is turning out to be a bit better than I thought he would be!"
Having his second ride on A Good Yarn having steered him to 5 1/2 length victory at the same track two weeks ago, Jarrod Fry was also impressed - "that was pretty easy work," he said.
"He was able to stride to the front quite easily, it was a bit of a track work gallop for him really."
Asked if A Good Yarn was ready to be tested at metropolitan level, Fry was quick to respond - "it was such a dominant win, the city is the right place for him."
It was win number four from just seven starts for A Good Yarn who has given nothing else a chance claiming his last three by wide margins.
Bred by Dr Angus McKinnon out of the Inflate mare Little Thread, A Good Yarn is a full brother to last start Geelong winner Big Reel who has been successful on six occasions; a horse who also has plenty of pace and heart.
Admirable traits O'Lonhro passes on, much to satisfaction of Larneuk Stud's Neville Murdoch who admits to being on a bit of a high since his one of his own won in such great style at Cranbourne last week.
The Greg Eurell trained debutant O'Tauto,
who charged home to down an odds-on favourite over 1200m, heads to Flemington
on Saturday and Murdoch - who has knocked back several lucrative offers for the
colt - is excited.
"We have always had a big opinion of him - which is why Greg is happy to take him straight to a Flemington Saturday meeting."
Noting that the O'Lonhro breed are ready-made racehorses - sound and tough with speed, Murdoch is proud that they can show up at two and three and race on.
"He has had a great run of winners of all ages of late," he said, pointing out that whilst his home-bred winner hails from O'Lonhro's fifth crop, three of his recent winners come the record breaking Chelmsford Stakes winner's first... Social Media, O'Loughlin and Union Jukebox who between them have won 16 races.
South Australian trainer Sue Jaensch looks to have a smart one in the shape of the lightly raced Gigglon who was never in any doubt saluting at start number three at Murray Bridge late last month whilst in New South Wales Skyscraper won two in a row.
Meanwhile Bettyrae Ruby, who has been competitive in classy company, was too good at Sale last week - doing it tough out wide but finding plenty at the finish.
Whilst O'Lonhro has been severely under utilized in recent times, Murdoch is confident that breeders, owners and trainers are now valuing the breed's durability and talent... "we already have quite a few more bookings for this spring than he served last year," he said.
"And with the likes of A Good Yarn, O'Tauto and Nan's Lonhro (a highly rated mare who was only just run down late after showing plenty of speed off an awkward start at debut as a long odds-on favourite last week) representing him I am sure people will stand up and take all the more notice of what a great job O'Lonhro is doing."
