$400 Broodmare Buy a Smart One for Coutts

Media Release - Monday August 6

A $400 gavelhouse broodmare buy in October last year has proved a very smart one for Otago-based breeder Jason Coutts.

Bought empty, Carnivale Queen(Starcraft) did have appeal on her page being a half to top filly Blackrock College (Volksraad) and Cashcade (Anziyan) who is the dam of Gr.1 Captain Cook Stakes winner Ekstreme (Ekraar) plus two other stakes performers.

SpurcraftPurchaser Jason Coutts is thrilled with his luck "At the time we bought her, her only possibility of a runner was an unraced four year old Jet Spur gelding so I didn't take much notice of that."

"We got her home and luckily she was ready to serve straight away so we covered her and she got in foal off that."

The Jet Spur turned out to be Queensland speedster Spurcraft and come November he won on debut and since then has amassed another five wins, three placings and $114,000 in prize-money to date with one of his placings a second in the Listed Chief De Beers Handicap during the Winter Carnival.

Coutt's also purchased his farm's resident stallion Prince of Brooklyn (Magnus) via gavelhouse.com Australia leading into the breeding season last year. With Jet Spur and Magnus sharing Flying Spur as their sire, there's plenty of anticipation around Carnivale Queen's eminent arrival this spring.

Prince of Brooklyn is from the Zabeel mare Tristabeel and was a precocious son of Magnus (Flying Spur) who won the Gr.3 National Stakes while at three he was stakes placed. A prolific producer of winners, all seven of Tristabeel's progeny to race have won and proving the cross with Magnus is a special one, her two other foals by him are stakes performers.

Currently online in the latest fortnightly New Zealand auction are 45 Lots including 18 broodmares with covering sires including Dalghar, Ocean Park, Preferment, Redwood, Reliable Man, Super Easy, Telperion, Tivaci and Vadamos. Bidding is set to close from 7pm on Monday 6 August while entries for the next gavelhouse.com Australia auction are due at 7pm AEST.
