Best On Breeding

Mark Smith - Thursday June 14

Gilgai Farm’s Rick Jamieson was entitled to feel a degree of optimism when he retired his Savabeel filly My Emotion to the broodmare paddock s 2011.

Purchased through agent Dermot Farrington for $230,000 out of the Turangga Farm draft at the 2008 Magic Millions Yearling Sale, My Emotion retired as the winner of three of her 16 starts with earnings of $291,100.

Her career highlights came when defeating Speedy Natalie, Aloha and Tallow in the Group II Moonee Valley Fillies Classic, the Group III TBV Stakes at her career debut and at her second start she defeated Highland Reel and Idaho’s Group 1-placed half-sister Valdemoro at Moonee Valley.

The defeat of Aloha was particularly significant as the daughter of Encosta De Lago would go on to win the Group 1 ATC Coolmore Classic.

And Aloha just happens to be out of the stakes-winning Danehill mare Tennessee Midnight who is also the dam of My Emotion’s mom Midnight Rock.

My Emotion’s contemporaries Speedy Natalie and Tallow have been quick off the mark at stud.

Speedy Natalie is the dam of the Group III VRC The Vanity winner Sweet And Speedy while Tallow is the dam of the promising 2yo Sandbar the winner of the Listed Lonhro Stakes.

Rick Jamieson has given My Emotion every chance to succeed at stud but she has been a heartbreak.

She has visited Stratum (x2), I Am Invincible (X2) and Sebring (pictured ) but for all her efforts in her first seven seasons she has just one live foal, a Sebring filly named Amanikan who is slated to make her career debut in Saturday’s 2-Y-O Fillies Hcp (1200m) at Moonee Valley.

My Emotion’s tale of woe includes a colt and filly by Stratum that died after birth, and an I Am Invincible filly that also died after birth.

She was not covered in 2012 and 2016 and missed to I Am Invincible last spring.

That leaves Amanikan as the lone representative to carry Jamieson’s black silks but bookmakers don’t rate her chances high on Saturday.

Like her dam, Amanikan is trained by Michael Kent, who has also enjoyed success with Sebring breed, most notably the Gilgai Farm bred Supido who has been retired to stand alongside his sire at Widden Stud in 2018.

While My Emotion is by the stamina influence Savabeel there is plenty of speed in the family as she is out of the Rory’s Jester mare Midnight Rock who is out of Danehill’s stakes-winning daughter Tennessee Midnight who is in turn out of Bletchingly’s Group II Maribyrnong Stakes-winning daughter Tennessee Morn.

The Tennessee family has featured many times in Best on Breeding so no reason to regurgitate it again here, but it is fascinating to see it branch out to so many successful lines.
