With six Book 1 yearlings and a further 14 catalogued in Book 2, Bowness Stud’s James and Jocelyn Daly head to this year’s Magic Millions yearling sale full of confidence in the draft which is headlined by eight yearlings from resident sire and G1 Rosehill Guineas winner D’Argento, the best performed son of So You Think at stud.
Black type success is always counted as the measure of success within the industry, and Bowness Stud’s four G1-winning graduates clearly place a spotlight on the Young-based thoroughbred operation which covers roughly 6000 acres of lush, nutrient rich pastures.
Keeping an eye on international racing, the team at Bowness Stud keenly take note of the results in Japan, with yearling graduates, and G1 winners Funstar (Adelaide) and Youngstar (High Chaparral) based in the land of the rising son after the half-sisters were secured for $2.7m and $1.4m respectively by Mr Katsumi Yoshida at the completion of their Australian racing campaigns.

While Funstar is yet to have a runner, Youngstar’s first foal (A$2.2m JRHA Select Foal Sale graduate) is the G2-winning, G1 placed Eri King, and with the success of runners out of Australian bred mares in Japan, it would be of no surprise to see the progeny of Funstar continue to follow suit.
Joining the half-sisters as a G1-winning graduate off the farm is the four-time G1 winner and G1 producing sire Trapeze Artist. Foaled, raised and yearling sale prepared by Bowness Stud, the son of Snitzel went on to become the Champion 3YO Colt of his generation.
Another 3YO G1 winner from the farm is Media Award, with the daughter of Shamus Award proving too strong for her rivals in the Group 1 SAJC Australasian Oaks of her classic season.
“We’re extremely proud of the success our graduates have had on the track, and even more so with the way D’Argento has commenced his stud career, siring six stakes performers and going very close to producing his own G1 winner from his first crop with Statuario a narrow second in the G1 South Australian Derby at 3,” said James Daly.
“Although our draft for this year’s Magic Millions is heavily reliant on D’Argento, we’re also looking forward to offering yearlings from the first, and second crops of a host of exciting young stallions including Artorius, Profiteer, Best Of Bordeaux and Tiger Of Malay.”
Lot 470: D’Argento x Lift All Boats colt

This colt is a D’Argento half-brother to the dual Listed-winning farm graduate, and 11-time winner Bubba’s Bay. He is out of a mare by Commands, broodmare sire of more than 110 stakes performers including six G1 winners highlighted by Captivant, Hayasugi and Socks Nation.
“A forward, athletic colt with scope and the muscle you’d expect from the Commands line.”
Lot 582: D’Argento x More Stories filly

A grey, just like her sire, this filly is out the More Than Ready half-sister to three-time G1 winner Shamekha, dam of the G2-winning, G1 placed Shumookh. August foaled daughter of Zousain, the sire of seven stakes performers of which six are fillies, Lot 869 is the second foal of the Shamus Award mare Streets Of Suemori, from a Godolphin/Darley black type family.
“An exceptionally good-looking filly, strong and well grown with beautiful balance.”
Lot 922: Artorius x True Magic colt

From the first crop of Flying Artie’s dual G1 winner Artorius, Lot 922 is the third foal out of the Listed placed Pierro mare True Magic, a half-sister to the multiple stakes placed Encosta de Lago mare Diva Dee.
From the family of Encosta de Lago’s G1 winner Road To Rock, this colt is out of a Pierro mare, broodmare sire of 18 stakes performers led by G1 winners Jacquinot and Femminile.
“An eye-catching colt with a lovely, fluent stride, combining the best of Artorius’ athleticism with the class of Pierro.”
Lot 924: D’Argento x Trust Her colt

D’Argento colt out of the Zoustar mare Trust Her, a half-sister to the Listed-winning, G1 Thousand Guineas fourth placed Anjana. Lot 924 is bred on the same Redoute’s Choice x More Than Ready pedigree cross that has produced 12 winners from 19 runners led by the G3 Gimcrack Stakes winner and Magic Millions 2YO Classic runner-up Platinum Jubilee.
“A real powerhouse of a colt, deep through the shoulder and hindquarter with plenty of strength.”
Lot 951: Diatonic (Jpn) x Vida Rose colt

From the second southern hemisphere crop of Lord Kanaloa’s G2-winning son Diatonic, Lot 951 s the third foal out of the winning Fastnet Rock mare Vida Rose, a daughter of the G3-winning, G1 fourth placed Sacred Eye from the extended family of Champion Sires Flying Spur and Encosta de Lago.
“Strong well-made colt with great depth, with a professional, purposeful walk. Plenty of Fastnet Rock influence.”
“While both part of our Book 2 offering, the pair by Profiteer both have appeal, and like their speedy stakes-winning sire, should be early runners,” enthused Jocelyn Daly.
“We sold a colt by Profiteer at last year’s National Sale to Hong Kong’s Peter Kwan. Named Profit In Paradise, the colt is in the Gold Coast stable of Paul Shailer and off the back of a recent a seven-length barrier trial win, he will look to make his debut in the $500,000 Magic Millions The Debut 2YO Plate (1000m) on January 17.”
Lot 1073: Profiteer x Il Professionale colt

A son of Capitalist stallion Profiteer, this colt is the third foal out of the Pierro mare Il Professionale, the dam of one of D’Argento’s most promising runners in Ladies Pro, a last start fourth in the G2 Western Australian Guineas at just her third start.
From the family of G1 winners Universal Prince, Universal Queen, Think It Over and Krone, this colt is out of a Pierro mare, broodmare sire of 18 stakes performers led by G1 winners Jacquinot and Femminile.
“A racy, forward colt with strength through the hindquarter, and the sharp look of a 2yo type.”
Lot 1178: Profiteer x She’s A Storm filly

Our bay Profiteer filly is out of the Artie Schiller mare She’s A Storm, a half-sister to the Listed winner Storm Rolling In and the dual Listed placed Trust Me Bet.
An extended family which includes G1 winners Badger’s Coast, Surfing Home and Floatyourboat, this filly is out of a mare by Artie Schiller, broodmare sire of 22 stakes performers.
“A neat, stylish filly with a fluent action and great balance. Plenty of athletic quality with an intelligent.”
Inspections of the Bowness Stud draft are being conduct in Stable Y and Z.
