G1 Plans for Invincible Sprinter

Tara Madgwick - Saturday December 6

A five year-old son of I Am Invincible, Caballus is a very much a sprinter on the rise and turned in a blistering performance at Doomben on Saturday to go within a whisker of the course record when blasting his rivals to win the Group III BRC George Moore Stakes (1200m).

Winner of the Group III VRC Rising Fast Stakes (1200m) two starts back, Caballus was bouncing out of unplaced run on the heavy track at Flemington in the Group I VRC Champions Sprint and found conditions to suit.

The Bjorn Baker trained Darby Racing colour bearer was given top weight of 60kg for this assignment and made light work of the task giving Tommy Berry an easy steer to win by three lengths.

He stopped the clock in 1:07.84 seconds which was just outside the track record.

With Bjorn Baker not on course, bloodstock agent Jim Clarke was representing the stable.

"It didn't work out exactly the way we envisaged," Clarke said.

"I think Tommy wanted to follow a couple (of runners) but he jumped well and found the lead fairly easily.

"He won at Flemington during the carnival and I think Bjorn has pretty big aspirations for him possibly in the autumn and back here in the winter.

"Maybe even a race like the Stradbroke (G1) would be ideal for him."

Not eligible for the rich Magic Millions race day being an Inglis graduate, Caballus has the overall record of six wins from 18 starts with prizemoney topping $959,000.

Raced by Coolmore and partners initially, Caballus was a $1million Inglis Easter purchase for Tom Magnier from the Bhima Thoroughbreds draft and was broken in and educated at Coolmore.

He was then offered through Inglis Digital in October 2023 when bought by Darby Racing for $315,000.

Bred by Reg Ryan, he is the best of five winners from five to race from Group III placed Commands mare Calming Influence, a daughter of stakes-winner Calming.

Calming Influence has a yearling filly by Ole Kirk and has foaled this spring producing a filly by Zoustar.

Caballus is one of seven stakes-winners this season for I Am Invincible, who went close in the following race with his promising three year-old fillies Sylph and Ernaux finishing second and third in the Listed RB Mode Stakes.
