Stakes Double for Westbury Stud Sires

Media Release - Monday December 1

New stakes winners for resident stallions Redwood and Tarzino were celebrated by Westbury Stud at the weekend.

The former’s homebred daughter Pulsatilla produced a dominant performance to land the Listed Trevor & Corallie Eagle Memorial 3YO (1500m) at Ellerslie while Tarzino’s strapping son Tshiebwe romped home in the Listed Wanganui Cup (2040m).

The Shaun and Emma Clotworthy-trained Pulsatilla is also owned by stud principal Gerry Harvey and will follow a path toward the Gr.1 New Zealand Oaks (2400m).

“She was always a nice filly and is out of an older mare, so we retained her to race,” Westbury General Manager Russell Warwick said.

“She had a two-year-old prep when she went into the stable to familiarise her with the system and then went out for a spell.

“When she came back into work, she continued to please Shaun and trialled impressively at Ellerslie.”

Pulsatilla then finished fifth on debut behind subsequent Gr.1 New Zealand 1000 Guineas (1600m) winner Well Written before breaking her maiden at Avondale.

“Shaun really rates the filly and there’s a lot of improvement left in her,” Warwick said.

“She’s learning all the time and has a good brain, her grandmother is (dual Group One winner) Jezabeel so she’ll head to the Eight Carat (Gr.2, 1600m) and the Oaks.

“She’s got a good turn of foot and sometimes they don’t have to be an out and out stayer to win an Oaks, as we’ve seen in the past.”

Pulsatilla is out of the late Rock Of Gibraltar mare Edie, who produced seven winners with her last foal a yearling colt by Redwood.

“She had been a good mare to us and left Edit, who ran fourth in The Kosciuszko (1200m), Lucky Edie was stakes placed and Louisville was a pretty talented horse and we never saw the best of him,” Warwick said.

Redwood also sired Rosehill Country Classic (2000m) winner Blacklist, a Westbury-bred son of the late Encosta De Lago mare Pure Light, while farm graduate Platinum Tyche won the closing event at Wanganui for Lisa Latta.

“Cody Cole has got a two-year-old brother to Blacklist for us, he’s called Militant,” Warwick said.

Two-time winner Platinum Tyche is a half-sister to the talented Wallen (Tarzino) with their dam the unraced More Than Ready mare Nouveau Amour.

“Cody also bought her Tarzino filly off us (for $80,000), she’s called Amourette and has had a couple of quiet two-year-old trials and gone very well,” Warwick said. “She might be a horse you’ll hear more of after Christmas.”

Meanwhile, Tshiebwe won for the sixth time in his 16-start career with a dominant success in the Wanganui Cup to jump to the top of the market for the Gr.3 NZ Campus Of Innovation & Sport Wellington Cup (3200m).

He is prepared by Allan Sharrock, who bred the lightly tried six-year-old with his fellow owner Dean McKenzie.

“Allan has done a great job and placed him really well, it’s good for him and Dean who supported Tarzino very well when he first went to stud,” Warwick said.

“They have been very patient as you have to be with a big horse like Tshiebwe and are reaping the rewards.” – LOVERACING.NZ News Desk.
