One to Watch – Sha Tin – You Don’t See That Every Day!

Tara Madgwick - Monday October 27

The Mark Newnham stable has been on fire in Hong Kong since the start of the new season and the former Sydney trainer produced a super promising winner at Sha Tin on Sunday by Capitalist that did everything wrong and miraculously still won the race!

Ever Luck scores a miraculous win - image HKJC

Three year-old gelding Ever Luck was a hot favourite for his first start over 1200m having shown good talent in three previous trials this year.

Coming to the turn all was going to plan with James Orman coasting along in front on Ever Luck, but the son of Capitalist failed to negotiate the turn and speared out wide taking another runner with him.

By the 300m mark, Orman had the horse back under control and amazingly was able to get him to focus enough to run down the leader and go on and win by nearly two lengths…. Goodness knows how far he would have won by had he not gone walkabout on the turn.

Following a lengthy stewards’ inquiry, Ever Luck was allowed to keep his impressive maiden win and there will no doubt be more wins in store for this untapped talent.

Ever Luck was a $300,000 Inglis Easter purchase.

A $300,000 Inglis Easter purchase from Segenhoe Stud for N Lee, Ever Luck is a half-brother to stakes-winners Usmanov and Deel Her In being the sixth winner from six foals to race from Mining Tycoon, a winning half-sister by Redoute’s Choice to triple Group I winner Bentley Biscuit.

Mining Tycoon has a yearling filly by Blue Point (IRE) and has foaled this spring producing a colt by Harry Angel (IRE).

Capitalist has a growing presence in Hong Kong and has had 15 winners in the region in 2025.
