Alwyn Park Stud owner John Andrew has received a positive post-script to Magnificent Andy’s victory in the inaugural $1 million Golden Saddle (1200m) at Kalgoorlie on Saturday.
Magnificent Andy is a homebred for David Reed and his dam Yaloginda (Trade Fair) was confirmed in foal to Alwyn Park sire Maschino on Wednesday morning.
“She had a Playing God colt in August and the PPT to Maschino caps off a wonderful week for David,” Andrew said. “Maschino is coming off a best-ever season and there’s 100 mares in his current book.”
Maschino (Encosta De Lago) is in elite company with Andrew who is a Life Member of Thoroughbred Breeders WA. He stands Maschino for Jim and Trish Anderson and they decided to keep faith with long-term breeders who supported the Group-winning sprinter when he was covering single-figure books early on at stud. His service fee remains the same at $8,800 (inc GST) when it probably warranted another increase.
Maschino was runner-up to Playing God ($8.25 million) in the 2024-25 WA Sires’ Premiership with earnings of $5.53 million. Jokers Grin was his chief-earner after banking a multi-million winning purse in the Kia Quokka (1200m) at Ascot in April.
Jokers Grin’s dam Walk In Beauty (Barely A Moment) went back to the Alwyn Stud resident to foal a colt last year and a filly last month. Former Yarradale Stud manager Mark Jones booked her into Maschino again and he’s hoping for another positive this term.
So is former Scenic Lodge manager Kristy Reynolds who received the WA Broodmare of the Year Award for Gracie May in August. She sent the Written Tycoon mare to Maschino after their initial mating created this year’s G2 WA Derby - G3 WA Oaks winner Machine Gun Gracie.
“I helped educate Machine Gun Gracie,” Reynolds recalled after the classic double. “She really impressed me during her yearling prep and I was fortunate enough to buy her dam before she raced. Gracie May wasn’t served last season and she’s already been covered twice by Maschino so fingers-crossed she comes back with a PPT.”
Coral Park Stud owners Glen and Kathy Money know all about the breeding business going back to Champion Sire Beau Sovereign (NZ) who was based at their North Dandalup nursery for over 15 years in the 1970s and ‘80s. Among his Group 1 winners was Palace Reign who won a Caulfield Guineas (1600m) before retiring to stand at Alwyn Park.
The Moneys race Maschino mare Bonjoy in a stable syndicate with trainer Jason Miller and she won the LR Starstruck Classic (1500m) last December before completing a hat-trick in the Australia Day Stakes and Ascot Mile. “She was placed in a Lark Hill trial on Monday and Jason was very happy looking ahead to the summer carnival,” Andrew said. “I leased her dam Amity Belle from Glen and Kathy for two years and bred Bonjoy and her younger half-brother Audio Boy (Sessions). He’s won at Ascot and has been nommed for Ascot again this Saturday.
“Amity Belle (Snitzel) has a yearling colt by Maschino and we’re all hoping there’s another positive to him this season.”
Mardella-based Anita Vale Stud owners Robert and Ann Anderson are another Westspeed couple patronizing Maschino. Their Group 1 producer Elite Ateates (Exceed And Excel) was covered by him on Wednesday.
Elite Ateates foaled G1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) winner Elite Street (Street Boss) first-up and she arrived at Alwyn Park with an Ingratiating filly at foot. And she owns a pedigree that would not be out of place in the Hunter Valley.
Second-dam Ateates (Zedative) was a Group 2 winner in Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide and her full-sister Ruffles (Zedative) was named 1997 Champion Australian Female Sprinter after winning the Group 1 VRC Newmarket Hcp (1200m) at Flemington.
Alwyn Park and the Andersons topped Day 1 of this year’s Perth Magic Millions when the Playing God - Clear Blue Sky (Sessions) colt made $450,000 in the Swan Valley. He has been named God's Hammer by local automotive entrepreneur Idan Young.
Meanwhile, Magnificent Andy has pulled up a treat after the Golden Saddle and there’s several rich sprints that trainer Stephen Miller and David Reed can target at the Ascot summer carnival. The G1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) on November 30 and G3 Gold Rush (1400m) on December 14 both carry prizemoney pools of $1.5 million.
“I rang David yesterday and was wondering whether they could connect me to Cloud 9,” Andrew laughed. “He was tickled pink with Saturday’s win and news of Yaloginda’s positive test.”
Reed bred Magnificent Andy when his sire Magnus stood at Sun Stud in Victoria’s Macedon Ranges. Reed is a Life Member of the Kalgoorlie-Boulder Racing Club and he had tapped into the family when buying second-dam Obtrusive (Telesto) for $26,000 through agent John Chalmers at the 2005 Gold Coast Magic Millions Yearling Sale.
