Snitzel's Perast Burst Back To Form at Doomben

Mark Smith - Saturday May 12

Winner of the Caulfield Guineas Prelude and fifth in the Caulfield Guineas last spring, Perast burst back to that form to capture Saturday's Listed Queensland Day Handicap (1350m) at Doomben.

The 3yo son of Snitzel led at every call under Tim Clark to hold the challenge of Marsupial (Street Cry) by one and a quarter lengths with Mishani Bullitt (Show a Heart) the same distance back in third.

Perast is trained at Newcastle by Paul Perry who is rarely without a winner at the Sydney and Melbourne carnivals but rarely travels to Brisbane.

"I think the last time I was here was when Newport won the Brisbane Cup (2007). I only bring them up here if I think they are good enough," Perry told AAP

"This bloke ran a good race to win a Caulfield Guineas Prelude last spring and then he was fifth in the Caulfield Guineas. I think at set weights he probably had something on today's field.

"There are plenty of races here for him and a race like the (Group II) Queensland Guineas looks ideal. But we will have to look for a programme to get there."

Bred by G S A Bloodstock, Perast advances his overall record to 3 wins and 2 thirds from 13 starts with earnings of $303,383.

Carrying the colours of Frank Cook, Perast (pictured as a yearling) was a $100,000 purchase by his trainer from the Maluka Thoroughbreds draft at the 2016 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale.

He is the seventh foal of Zabeel's Listed SAJC St Leger winner Thousand Veils.

A daughter of the Group III placed Success Express mare Forever Dancing, Thousand Veils missed to High Chaparral in 2014 and to Smart Missile in 2015.

Sadly,  Thousand Veils died in January. Her final foal is a weanling colt by Smart Missile.
