Ones to Watch – Newcastle

Tara Madgwick - Friday September 19

Michael Freedman has a lot of well bred three year-olds in the stable and two of them cast off maiden status at Newcastle on Friday at their second start, the first a blueblood filly by Frankel and the second a full brother to Switzerland.

A homebred for Fairway Thoroughbreds, Frankel filly Magenta Skies (GB) improved off her debut third at the same track last month to score a strong victory in the 1400m maiden.

She was doing her best work on the line for Tim Clark to win by nearly two lengths and raced as though further will be even better.

Conceived in the Northern Hemisphere, Magenta Skies is a half-sister to stakes-winner Millane and is the fourth winner from four to race from Group III winning Snitzel mare Fireworks, a half-sister to Group I winner Calveen from a prolific Black Type family.

Fireworks returned to Australia in foal to Frankel again and produced a colt from that mating last spring.

She was on-sold by Fairway Thoroughbreds in the Segenhoe Stud draft at the Inglis Chairman’s Sale earlier this year fetching $540,000 to the bid of David Redvers Bloodstock. Offered in foal to Home Affairs, Fireworks produced a filly for her new owners last month.

Snitzel colt Decorum was a fast finishing second on debut at Warwick Farm at the start of the month and was well fancied in the 1400m maiden with Rory Hutchings to ride.

Once again he showed no early pace settling back in the field and unwound a powerful late dash to arrive on the line and win by a head.

A $550,000 Inglis Easter purchase from Arrowfield for TFI, Decorum is the second foal of imported Group III winner Ms Bad Behavior (Can), who has been married to Snitzel and her first foal is Group I winner Switzerland, who is now standing his first season Coolmore this spring.

Decorum was a $550,000 Inglis Easter purchase.

Her third foal is another colt by the late champion sire that made a massive $2.7million at Inglis Easter this year to become the highest priced yearling by Snitzel ever sold.

Arrowfield Stud will have another Snitzel yearling colt from Ms Bad Behavior for the sales in 2026 and she was covered by him again last year.
