Godolphin 2YO SW Starspangledbanner

Tara Madgwick - Saturday September 13

Godolphin splashed out for a 450,000 guinea Starspangledbanner colt at the Tattersalls October Book 2 Yearling Sale last year and Avicenna made it two wins in as many starts when taking out the Listed Flying Scotsman Stakes (7f) at Doncaster overnight.

Trained by Roger Varian, Avicenna won on debut over the same course last month and this time with William Buick in the saddle he finished hard to get up in the very last stride.

“Avicenna is learning on the job, was strong through the line and is a horse to look forward to,” said Roger Varian.

“He's always looked a good horse and we felt he took a good step forward at home since that first run. He'll get a mile, whether this year or next. I think he'll probably be a miler, I don't know whether he's good enough for a Guineas, he's just won a Listed by a nose. He's a nice horse, we don't need to get carried away yet.”

Avicenna sold for 450,000 guineas as a yearling.

Bred by Sue Ann Foley and offered in the Islanmore Stud draft, Avicenna is the first stakes-winner among three winners from Love Potion, a winning Galileo mare that traces through her tail female line ot Best in show via the Monroe branch of the family.

Avicenna is the 57th stakes-winner for Choisir’s champion son Starspangledbanner, who did not shuttle to Australia this year remaining at Coolmore in Ireland at a fee of €45,000.
