New G2 Winner for St Marks Basilica

Tara Madgwick - Friday September 12

Coolmore shuttler St Mark’s Basilica (Fr) has had a flurry of promising winners in recent weeks and among then is talented filly Aylin, who claimed her first Black Type win overnight when taking out the Group II May Hill Stakes (1m) at Doncaster.

Trained by Karl Burke and ridden by David Egan, she improved on a last start third in the Group III Prestige Stakes at Goodwood to score a three-quarter length win, her second from four starts.

Her best work was on the line with the step to a mile obviously in her favour.

“I thought she was going to struggle three out, but the extra furlong suited her,” said Karl Burke.

“She ran well last time, but got in a little bit of trouble. The question is now whether to go again in the Fillies' Mile or Marcel Boussac. She was very fit today and so it's a little bit of a question mark as to how she will take this race and whether another run will be one too many.”

Aylin made 600,000 guineas and was the highest priced filly sold at Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 2.

An expensive yearling purchase, Aylin was secured for 600,000 guineas at Tattersalls October Book 2 Yearling Sale last year. Offered in the Yeomanstown Stud draft, she was bought by Alex Elliott for a partnership between Al Shaqab and Amo Racing.

Aylin is the third winner from three foals to race from stakes-winning Dark Angel mare Angelic Light, who traces back to the family of Group I winners Kitesurf and Treasure Beach.

She is one of 13 first crop winners for St Mark’s Basilica and is his second stakes-winner.

The 2021 European Horse of the Year is back at Coolmore Australia this spring at a fee of $38,500.
