Toronado Withdrawn from Service

Tara Madgwick - Monday September 8

Victorian breeders have been dealt a blow with Swettenham Stud announcing on Sunday evening that their champion sire Toronado (IRE) would not cover any mares in 2025 as he recovers from a significant infection that caused lameness.

Toronado (IRE) is out of service.

On vet’s advice the best decision for the horse is complete rest to give him every chance to make a complete recovery.

“Toronado has played a huge role in the history of Swettenham Stud, as well as the Victorian industry, and we really see him as part of our family,” said Adam Sangster in a statement.

“His health and wellbeing come first to everyone at the farm so this was a straightforward decision. We are very grateful to the understanding shown by all the breeders who had mares booked to him. While it is unlikely that he will cover again this season, we are confident that as a 15-year-old, he has many promising years ahead of him.”

Toronado would have been fully booked at a fee of $88,000.
