One to Watch – Wyong

Tara Madgwick - Sunday August 31

Trial watchers have been impressed in recent weeks with the efforts of the Bjorn Baker trained King’s Legacy colt Whatalegacy and he duly made a winning debut at Wyong on Sunday.

A half-brother to Group I winning sprinter and $2.1million earner Benedetta, Whatalegacy beat top class colt Skyhook in a barrier trial at Rosehill in July and then looked super impressive scoring in a trial at Canterbury earlier this month.

Well primed  for his debut in the 1000m maiden, Dylan Gibbons took luck out of the equation when beginning fast from an outside gate and used his natural pace to press forward ad lead.

Whatalegacy gave a good kick turning for home and although tiring on the line he had enough left to win by half a length as a well backed favourite.

Whatalegacy was a $160,000 Inglis Premier purchase.

A $160,000 Inglis Premier purchase for Bjorn Baker/ Clarke Bloodstock from the Mill Park draft, Whatalegacy was bred by South Australian breeders Brenton and Liz Parker, who have retained small interest in the colt, who runs for a big group of stable clients.

He is a half-brother to Group I winner Benedetta and also Group II placed Whatafox being the fourth winner from five foals to race from Group II placed Domesday mare Whatalovelyday.

Whatalovelyday produced a full brother to Benedetta last year and is due to foal to Zoustar.

Whatalegacy is the 12th first crop winner for blueblood Redoute’s Choice stallion King’s Legacy, who stands at Coolmore this spring at a fee of $16,500.
