Too Darn Hot nomination realises $255,000 in August (Late) Sale

Media Release - Wednesday August 27

A nomination in exceptional young stallion Too Darn Hot has topped today’s Inglis Digital August (Late) Online Sale, selling for $255,000.

The sale of the Too Darn Hot nomination was a collaboration between Godolphin, Watership Down Stud and CatWalk, with all proceeds going directly toward funding critical research to help those living with spinal cord injuries.

The nom was purchased by keen breeder Taisen Maddern.

Godolphin CEO Andy Makiv was delighted with the outcome.

“It’s a wonderful result for Catwalk. The thoroughbred industry gets behind good causes and this is extremely important,’’ Makiv said.

“Too Darn Hot has quickly stamped himself as an elite young sire and the level of support for this nomination shows the confidence breeders have in him and in the initiative.

"We’re delighted that Taisen Maddern secured the nomination. He has been a great supporter and friend of Darley for many years and it came as no surprise that he bid more than anyone else."

CatWalk Executive Director Meg Speirs added: “We are incredibly grateful to Watership Down Stud and Godolphin for this extraordinary gift of a nomination to Too Darn Hot.

“The funds raised will go directly towards world-class research to cure spinal cord injury, offering real hope to those living with paralysis. Support like this not only drives scientific progress but also reminds us that together, we can turn the vision of a cure into a reality.’’

Buyer and hobby breeder Maddern has earmarked his Street Boss mare Sliders to be the beneficiary of the Too Darn Hot nomination purchase.

“I actually had Sliders booked into Too Darn Hot last year but when he didn’t come out we obviously missed out and it’s been hard to get into him so I thought I’d just buy the nom when I saw it come online with Inglis Digital,’’ Maddern said.

“In the end it was really easy, your new website is great, very easy to navigate.

“Hopefully this foal can be the next Broadsiding, that’s the plan or the dream.’’

Cold Brew sold for $180,000.

Today’s second-top lot was the in-form 4YO Cold Brew, which sold to Mustr Racing for $180,000.

Offered by trainers Richard and Will Freedman – who will remain the horse’s trainers – Cold Brew has won his past three starts on a range of different track surfaces, something that proved too strong a carrot for Mustr Racing’s Cameron Hay to shy away from.

Mustr is a new micro share syndication company, with Cold Brew its first purchase.

“It’s really exciting. We wanted our first horse to be up and running with the best still ahead and that’s exactly what Cold Brew is,’’ Hay said.

“He’s only been out of the quinella once in eight starts and he’s been winning on heavy, soft and good going so he’s a perfect first horse for us.

“The horse has primarily been bought for the Alpha Blokes Podcast community and people will be able to get in touch in mid-late September when the shares are getting released, just keep an eye on our socials over the next few weeks.

“I’ve sold plenty of horses with Pulse Racing on Inglis Digital but this was my first time buying one and I found it really easy. The new website is particularly good, the layout is great, it’s much clearer and very technically sound, you know exactly what’s going on at all times.’’

The Too Darn Hot nomination and Cold Brew were joined by Good Sort ($130,000) as six-figure lots in the August (Late) Sale, taking the number of $100,000+ lots sold on Inglis Digital this year to 92.

The August (Late) Sale grossed $2,822,450.

Entries are now open for the Inglis Digital September (Early) Online Sale, which will run from September 5-10.

In 2024, turnover through the two scheduled Inglis Digital auctions in September exceeded $7m, led by Cinderella Days, who realised $675,000, as well as significant results for the likes of Williamsburg ($455,0000), Imperial Force ($285,000), Celestial Storm ($170,000), Robusto ($160,000), Sandpaper ($130,000) and others.

Entries close at midnight next Wednesday, September 3.
