Widden Stud is delighted to announce the appointment of Mark Ford as Stud Manager of its Victorian farm at Riddells Creek.
With over three decades of experience in thoroughbred breeding, training and farm management across international settings, Mark brings a wealth of knowledge and a hands-on approach to all aspects of stud operations. Most recently, he managed Wyadup Valley Farm in Lancefield for two years, during which time he built strong relationships and open lines of communication with the network of breeders he will now be engaging at Widden Victoria.
After graduating from the University of Cape Town with a Diploma in Veterinary Science, Mark began his career in South Africa in Stud Management. He went on to hold roles across Zimbabwe, Queensland and Western Australia, including successful stints as a racehorse trainer and equine behaviour specialist. His career has been marked by multiple race wins and a strong reputation for his work in rehabilitation.
Mark’s diverse breeding and farming background spans both boutique family-run farms and large-scale commercial operations, and with a leadership style focused on staff mentoring, horsemanship and a commitment to welfare, he is set to complement the existing team of staff alongside Adam Henry (Nominations) and Jeremy Vaughan (Breaking & Pre-Training) in Widden’s goal of elevating their Victorian breeding operation.
“With its proud history, Widden holds an iconic place in the Australian thoroughbred industry,” said Mark. “It’s a privilege to be joining the Victorian team of a farm I have such great respect for, and I’m thrilled to be able to contribute to their continued success by bringing my passion and strong work ethic to the role.”
Antony Thompson commented: “We are constantly improving the already well-established resources available on the Victorian farm. With Mark’s extensive experience across all facets of breeding and farm management, along with his calm leadership and deep understanding of both horses and people, we’re confident he’ll be a great fit for the team. Mark’s versatility and long-standing dedication to the industry will help guide Widden Victoria through its next chapter of innovation and growth.”
Mark will be based full-time at the Riddells Creek property and is keen to meet clients and breeders at the Widden Victoria stallion parade day which will commence at 10:30am on Friday August 15, 2025.
