This will be the last Juvenile Trial Watch story for this season with all these youngsters to turn three on Friday and there was plenty of action with eight heats won by 2YOs and two more of this season’s G3 2YO’s North England and Memo stepping out against the older G1 stars.
$2million earner Lindermann looked to thoroughly enjoy himself in his first trial of the spring of with the Chris Waller trained son of Lonhro cruising around with ears pricked to lead all the way and win his 900m heat by half a length over last year’s Group I MRC Thousand Guineas winner Another Prophet.
North England was a close third, travelling deep through and well held together to the line with Memo likewise a comfortable fourth and was happy to follow the others home this time. Older G1 winners Moira (Can ) and Asterix rounded out the trial.
The quickest of the 2YO heats at 900m was won by Whatalegacy, the unraced half-brother by King’s Legacy to Group I winner Benedetta. Trained by Bjorn Baker and ridden by Dylan Gibbons, he was having his second lifetime trial and first this prep and showed loads of natural talent to lead all the way and win.
Quality colts West of Swindon and Skyhook closed late but couldn’t get past him with a big gap back to the rest, so you would want to be following all three of these colts to race day.
A $160,000 Inglis Premier purchase from Mill Park, Whatalegacy is a half-brother to $2million earning Group I winning sprinter Benedetta, Group II placed Whatafox and multiple metro winner Sunset Dreaming and he might be another above average winner for his dam G2 placed dam Whatalovelyday.
It’s a serious old G1 family with Group I winners Pharoah, Leica Guv and Light Fantastic all on the page.
Last seen winning the Group III ATC Canonbury Stakes, the Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou trained Snitzel colt Blitzburg was having his second trial back here and was strong through the line winning by more than a length.
From a Japanese bred mare with plenty of staying blood, so Blitzburg profiles as a likely improver at three and stepping up to a mile at least might well suit.
The Chris Waller stable is packed with Wootton Bassett (GB) offspring and his unraced filly Asilah turned in her best trial of four to date when taking the lead out wide before the turn and pushing on to win.
Also keep an eye on Group winner King of Pop, who was cuddled along in a quiet trial for third.
A $450,000 Inglis Easter purchase for Suman Hedge that runs for B2B Thoroughbreds, Asilah is the third foal of Group II winning Smart Missile mare I’ll Have a Bit.
Some proven quality in this trial with the Group placed pair of Sanctified taking the win over Savvy Hallie and following along back in the field and not asked for much was Group I placed Wootton Bassett colt State Visit.
The Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou trained Sanctified has been gelded during his break and given what we know now about the Super Seth’s and their ability to improve at three, he’s going to be a horse to follow.
This trial was a must watch given the reappearance of Within the Law, who was having her first trial back. The Bjorn Baker trained daughter of Lucky Vega (IRE), showed talent and tenacity with seven starts in stakes company and she won or placed in all of them bar the Golden Slipper when she fell through the inside running rail.
A remarkable filly with a ferocious desire to win, she closed off late for third behind Godolphin’s I Am Invincible colt Ohope, who is now with Michael Freedman.
A big strong colt, Ohope had three starts earlier this year that yielded nothing to get too excited about, so he needs to up his game on race day or he’ll be called Nohope instead of Ohope!
Finishing right on the tail of Within the Law and having her very first trial was Wear the Crown, an interesting I Am Invincible filly trained by Danielle Seib, who rarely trials a horse in Sydney.
Cheap for an I Am Invincible at $260,000, Wear the Crown is the first foal of G3 winning Snitzel mare Macroura, a three-quarter sister to G1 superstar Sunshine in Paris. She has a big pedigree and the fact she had a trial here today indicates she is held in some regard by the stable.
