$1million Mehmas a Stakes-Winner for Godolphin

Tara Madgwick - Saturday July 19

One of the big ticket purchases for Godolphin at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale last year was the half-brother to triple Group I winner Perfect Power by Mehmas and this 1million guinea purchase opened his stakes account overnight in the UK.

Trained by Charlie Appleby and ridden by William Buick, Wise Approach was favourite for the Listed Rose Bowl Stakes (6f) at Newbury coming off a good second in the Group II Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot.

He settled last and let down with a lethal turn of foot to win by four lengths, his second win from four starts.

“It was a nice performance. Wise Approach ran a good race at Ascot where he was on a different side to the winner. I think he'll develop. He's quite a scopey horse, but he was always very natural from early on,” said William Buick.

A 1million guinea purchase from Tattersalls October Yearlings Book 1, Wise Approach is the most expensive yearling by Mehmas ever sold.

Bred and sold by Tally Ho Stud, Wise Approach is a half-brother to brilliant sprinter Perfect Power, who won the Group I Middle Park Stakes and Prix Morny at two before taking the Group I Royal Ascot Commonwealth Cup at three to be Champion European 3YO Sprinter.

He is also a half-brother to stakes-placed Golden Mind and is the third winner and third Black Type horse from three to race for his dam Sagely, a half-sister by Frozen Power to the dam of stakes-winner Epic Poet.

He is the 44th stakes-winner for Acclamation stallion Mehmas, who has enjoyed quite the ride to commercial fame and fortune standing this year at Tally Ho Stud a fee of €70,000, a big increase on the early days when he started at €12,500 before dropping as low as €7,500 in 2020.

Mehmas produces fast sprinter milers and runs at 60% winners to runners with 7% SW to runner and eight of his 44 SW’s are G1 winners.

The Acclamation sireline has had a taste of success in Australia through his grand-son Harry Angel (IRE) with another Group I winning representative being Raheen Stud’s young stallion Top Ranked (IRE).
