Day 1 Tattersalls July - Humam Top Seller 190,000 guineas

Media Release - Wednesday July 9

The opening day of the Tattersalls July Sale saw solid trade headed by the Kingsclere Training Stables consigned HUMAM at 190,000 guineas, one of six lots to realise over 100,000 guineas. A typically international buying bench saw purchasers from France, Libya, Qatar and the UAE as well as Great Britain and Ireland represented in the day’s top ten lots.

Humam Headed to Stuart Williams at 190,000 Guineas

Newmarket-based trainer Stuart Williams enjoyed his latest Group victory courtesy of stalwart Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale graduate QUINAULT in June and will welcome another smart prospect to the yard from Tattersalls in HUMAM, who realised 190,000 guineas on the opening day of the July Sale to TY Equine.

Offered by Andrew Balding’s Kingsclere Stables on behalf of owner Al Shaqab Racing & Partner, the three-year-old colt posted a smart catalogue update with victory on his most recent start at York over seven furlongs, earning an official rating of 92.

Stuart Williams revealed:

“He’s for a new owner to the yard who wanted to have a horse to run at the big tracks. We’ll target some of the big meetings and try to replicate what Andrew has done with him by winning at places like York. He won well last time and looks a solid horse, he is one we would hope will carry on improving with age and in line with what his family has done. I don’t know what he’s done lately, he hasn’t run for three or four weeks, but we’ll get him back to the yard and assess him before settling on a target.”

He added: “Whatever the price is, there’s that many people around the sale and whoever buys the horse is the maddest person on the day because you’re the one who bid the most! That sort of price was what we were expecting to pay though.”

The son of KODIAC is a half-brother to multiple Group winning filly VADREAM and the Listed placed pair MIRAGE HERO and MIDREAM from the family of European Champion Three-Year-Old and dual Derby winner HARZAND.

Godolphin’s Rose Arbour to Stroud Coleman Bloodstock for 170,000 Guineas

Fillies and mares consigned by Godolphin are a perennial highlight of the Tattersalls July Sale and the draft proved popular in the sale’s first session with three six figure lots. The highest priced among them was the unraced FRANKEL filly ROSE ARBOUR who was secured for 170,000 guineas by Stroud Coleman Bloodstock, bidding online.

Successful purchaser Anthony Stroud commented:

“She is for an existing client in Ireland. She is a good looking mare, is by Frankel, is out of a smart Stakes-winning Dubawi mare and is from a lovely family. Frankel is not only a fantastic stallion but is an outstanding broodmare sire too, as is Dubawi – she has got the genetics to have a very good chance at stud.”

ROSE ARBOUR is out of the DUBAWI mare CROWN WALK, winner of the Group 3 Prix Chloé and second in the Group 1 Prix Rothschild. CROWN WALK is a half-sister to the Group 1 Prix Ganay winner CUTLASS BAY, the Group 2 King Edward VII Stakes winner BOSCOBEL and CRESTED, a Listed winner and multiple Graded Stakes placed in the USA.

Sumbe Strike for Spring Lantern at 150,000 Guineas

The equal third highest-priced lot of the opening session was another offering from the ever-popular Godolphin draft with SPRING LANTERN knocked down for 150,000 guineas to Tony Fry on behalf of Sumbe, with Henry Lascelles the frustrated underbidder.

Nurlan Bizakov’s Sumbe stands exciting first season sire CHARYN, himself a 250,000 guineas purchase at Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, and the daughter of FRANKEL will visit the Champion Miler with Tony Fry commenting:

“She looks perfect for Charyn, she will be a lovely mare for him. She was quick and is strong, and we are pleased to have got her.”

CHARYN has just come to the end of his first season at stud and Fry revealed the three-time Group 1 winner has proved equally adept in the covering barn:

“He saw 175 mares and has 92 percent fertility. He is a tiger!”

SPRING LANTERN won her maiden impressively at Chantilly by three and a half lengths for trainer Henri-Alex Pantall and is from a deep international family, her dam ROSA IMPERIAL won the Group 3 Prix de Ris-Orangis and placed in the Group 1 Prix Rothschild and is a half-sister to 2024 Japanese Group winner OFF TRAIL.

The third dam MANNINGTON, herself a winner of the Group 3 Blue Diamond Prelude at Caulfield, is a daughter of the Australian Champion Two Year Old BINT MARSCAY, winner of the Group 1 Golden Slipper.

The four-year-old was offered in foal to Godolphin’s Champion Two Year Old PINATUBO, already the sire of seven blacktype performers from his first crop.

Jorge Alvarez Bound for Qatar at 150,000 Guineas

Leading Qatari trainer Jassim Ghazali is a regular purchaser at the July Sale and struck on the sale’s opening day for JORGE ALVAREZ at 150,000 guineas, having seen off the attentions of a persistent online bidder for the three-year-old son of COTAI GLORY.

“He is a smart horse and will suit the sprint races we have in Qatar,” said Ghazali. “My son tried to buy the horse last year and did not – we have had to pay more now!”

Ghazali added: “I had a very good season last year with 62 winners, and only Hamad Al-Jehani for Wathnan had more. Hopefully this horse will be a winner – I need plenty of good horses to take on Wathnan!”

Offered by the Castlebridge Consignment with an official rating of 89, JORGE ALVAREZ was previously trained by Ger Lyons for Gaelic Thoroughbreds who bought him for 38,000 guineas at the Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale.

The three-year-old broke his maiden by two lengths in April and has placed in three of four subsequent starts, culminating in an admirable effort when fifth in the Palace Of Holyroodhouse Stakes at Royal Ascot beaten just two and a half lengths.

The Tattersalls July Sale continues at 9.30am on Wednesday, 9th July.
