G1 Winning Champion 2YO Velocious to be Offered on Inglis Digital

Media Release - Wednesday July 2

The G1-winning Champion 2YO Velocious (Written Tycoon) will be offered for auction in the Inglis Digital July (Late) Online Sale.

Velocious was named NZ Champion 2YO in 2023/24 off the back of a spectacular juvenile campaign which ended with victory in the G1 Sistema Stakes.

Velocious is a G1 winning filly by Written Tycoon - Racing Images

She won four of her six starts at two – three times at Stakes level – as well as finishing a close-up 3rd behind three-time Group winner Bellatrix Star and G1 winner Move To Strike.

Her victory in the $1m Karaka 2YO Million was dominant, scoring by 2.3 lengths over subsequent Stakes winners Damask Rose, Bellatrix Star, Savaglee, Poetic Champion, Beau Dazzler, So Naïve etc.

Past winners of that race include the likes of Melody Belle, Avantage, Probabeel, Ruud Awakening etc.

Velocious’ crowning glory in the Sistema Stakes - where she became one of just six fillies to win the time-honoured feature in the past 20 years - saw her defeat subsequent G1 winners Captured By Love and Savaglee, plus Stakes winners Archaic Smile, Poetic Champion etc.

The Stephen Marsh-trained Velocious is one of only three G1-winning 2YO fillies by Written Tycoon. The other two are G1 Golden Slipper winner Lady of Camelot and La Luna Rossa, dam of this season’s G1 placed 2YO and Inglis Easter Yearling Sale graduate Hidden Achievement.

Velocious was a superstar for Go Racing - Racing Images

Part owner Albert Bosma of Go Racing described Velocious as “exceptional’’.

“She was so dominant as a 2YO, she had superior speed and class and that’s a powerful combination, that’s what makes an exceptional young horse,’’ Bosma said.

“When she won the Karaka Million, we went into that race enormously confident because we knew how good she was and when she won her G1 she got caught up in traffic on the way to the track and only arrived on course 40 minutes before the race so it was straight into saddling and into the mounting yard, there was no time to relax or recover and that’s hard for young horses.

“If we had brought her to Australia at two I have no doubt she would have measured up in Group 1 races.’’

Bosma believes Velocious will make a beautiful broodmare.

“She’s a good size, one of the things that surprised a lot of people as a 2YO was that she wasn’t a little thing, she’s a really good-sized mare, good length, correct, she moves well. In terms of a type she’s really got it all,’’ Bosma said.

“Anybody that looks at her is going to be very impressed with what they see.

“It’s a pedigree that continues to move and one we think will keep improving and we think offering her on Inglis Digital was the natural place to sell her, the platform’s record speaks for itself.’’

Inglis Bloodstock Sales Manager and New Zealand representative Brett Gilding said securing Velocious for sale by Inglis was the result of a long-term plan.

“We’re hugely grateful to Albert and the Go Racing team to be afforded this opportunity to offer Velocious on their behalf,’’ Gilding said.

“I was at Ellerslie when she won the Karaka Million and fell in love with her when I saw her in the paddock before the race – she is a beauty and I think people will love her when they see her.

“She was a very natural 2YO, winning twice before December 1, beating Bellatrix Star over 1000m on debut and then a Stakes race over 1100m.

“People want to breed and race horses like her and I think major breeders are going to be excited by the opportunity to breed from a horse like her.
