Countdown to NZB’s 2025 Weanling Sale

Media Release - Monday June 23

The countdown to NZB’s 2025 National Weanling Sale is underway, with a compact yet quality catalogue of 134 youngsters, plus 10 supplementary lots, selling this Thursday 26 June at Karaka.

A proven source of racetrack and investment success, recent stakes-performers sourced from this Sale include Jedibeel?(NZ) (Savabeel),?Pivotal Ten?(NZ) (Ten Sovereigns), plus Group One winners?Pignan?(NZ) (Staphanos),?Callsign Mav?(NZ) (Atlante),?Jennifer Eccles?(NZ) (Rip Van Winkle), Karaka Millions 2YO winner Tokyo Tycoon (NZ) (Satono Aladdin), and more.

Buyers will have the opportunity to secure progeny of established sires Proisir, Savabeel, Super Seth, Shamexpress, Almanzor, Per Incanto and Shocking, plus emerging sires Ace High, Ardrossan, Satono Aladdin, Super Seth, Sword of State, US Navy Flag and Hello Youmzain to name a few.

“We are pleased with the catalogue assembled, it is a great opportunity for local pinhookers, traders and end-users alike,” commented NZB’s Bloodstock Sales Manager Kane Jones.

“We’ve seen some outstanding pinhooking results from this Sale, with a number of weanlings proving profitable within a relatively short timeframe.

“Plus, the record these graduates have on the track speaks volumes, from just a small catalogue each year.”

Profondo is an exciting young sire for New Zelaand.

The 2025 edition of the National Weanling Sale will see Windsor Park Stud’s first season sire Profondo grace the Karaka sales ring. With nine lots on offer, the son of Deep Impact made a big impression on breeders in his first season at stud, covering 177 mares.

“He was well supported by breeders in his first and now second year. He is a talented son of Deep Impact and an asset to our breeding ranks," added Jones.

“There is healthy demand for our New Zealand product, given our domination on racetracks across the likes of Australia and Hong Kong in recent seasons.”

“There is certainly something for everybody and the Karaka Millions eligibility is a big bonus,” he added.

Seven of the supplementary weanlings are on account of renowned vendor Waikato Stud, who sold star Weanling Sale graduate Jedibeel (NZ), a recent winner of the Group Two Challenge Stakes at Randwick.

“We were a little late getting organised, but what we’re offering at this Weanling Sale indicates the strength of what we’ve got in store for the Karaka yearling sales,” stated Waikato Stud’s Mark Chittick.

“We always support any NZB sale and can only prepare so many yearlings at once. We believe we’ve got our strongest crop of weanlings on the ground, quality and quantity-wise, that we’ve had in a long time and that will be reflected in our draft for Karaka 2026 as we celebrate 100 years of the National Yearling Sales Series.”

All weanlings offered are eligible to be nominated for NZB’s lucrative Karaka Millions Series. Graduates can compete for a share in the $1m TAB Karaka Millions 2YO (1200m), followed by the $1.5m TAB Karaka Millions 3YO (1600m) as well as the new $1m Mega Maiden Series comprising of 40 non-Saturday maiden races located throughout New Zealand.

Weanlings entered in the Sale will be available for inspections at the on-farm parades, due to take place in early June, and on-site at Karaka Sales Centre, with NZB agents available to inspect on behalf of buyers.

In an exciting move, the National Weanling Sale will be held on the same date as the?National Standardbred Weanling Sale?at Karaka. The joint sale date will see the thoroughbred session get underway from 10am (NZT), with the standardbred weanlings following from 2.30pm.
