New G2 Winner for Almanzor

Tara Madgwick - Tuesday June 10

Wootton Bassett is one of the hottest stallions in the world at the minute and the horse that started it all for him came along in his very first crop and that was Cambridge Stud’s Almanzor (Fr), who posted his 25th stakes-winner overnight.

The Champion European 3YO of 2016, Almanzor scored his Group I wins in the Prix du Jockey Club  (French Derby), the GB Champions Stakes and Irish Champions Stakes, all of those races at either 2100 or 2000m, so it’s not surprising his offspring lean to the classic side of the distance spectrum.

Hist latest stakes-winner came in the Group II Union Rennen (2200m) at Cologne in Germany won by lightly raced three year-old colt Zuckerhut.

Trained by Peter Schiergen and ridden by Andrasch Starke, Zuckerhut score by a length as favourite at just his third start.

A homebred for Gestut Hachtsee, Zuckerhut is the first winner for Group II winning Samum mare Zamrud, a grand-daughter of Group I Longchamp Prix du Cadran winner Mercalle, so he is certainly bred for stamina.

Zuckerhut is the third Group II winning 3YO in Europe this year for Almanzor joining Italian Derby winner Molveno and Longchamp Prix Saint-Alary winner Gezora.
