$1500 Weanling Becomes $525,000 Top Lot at MM National Yearling Finale

Media Release - Tuesday June 3

A colt by Harry Angel set a new benchmark in Australia for his sire and topped the final day of the Magic Millions National Yearling Sale when selling for $525,000 to conclude a hugely successful two weeks of sales.

It was a battle royale for today's top seller with strong bidding before Hong Kong based trainer Manfred Man was able to come out on top and secure the youngster.

The colt by the same sire as Group One winners Tom Kitten and Private Harry is from the beautifully related Postponed mare Enclosure.

Enclosure is a daughter of Wrap Around and hails from the family of stars including Fashions Afield, Kiss and Make Up and Rose of Danehill.

"Harry Angel is now a red hot sire and is very popular in Hong Kong," Willie Leung said on behalf of the buyer.

"He's had a couple of really good winners in Hong Kong and that's why we got him for Manfred Man."

"This one looks really outstanding in the sale and with his outstanding pedigree I think he's a good buy."

"We come here for the best and I believe he's the best," Leung added.

The result was an incredible result for his owner Temerity Park, who pin-hooked the youngster for just $1,500 and then offered him today through the draft of Alma Vale Thoroughbreds. He is now the highest priced yearling by Harry Angel sold in Australia.

"He was bought online for $1,500 from Sledmere," Alma Vale's Verna Metcalfe said. "It's a huge result for Temerity Park - they're a very good client and they are battlers like we all are."

"It's so good to get a huge result like that. It's awesome to be selling up at Magic Millions and getting results like that," Metcalfe added.

"He turned up in pretty good shape," Alma Vale's Oscar Englebrecht noted. "We only put the polish on."

"He's been an absolute professional all week. He paraded so well. He had two really good judges on him and they really wanted to own him."

"We've had a pretty good year and it's great to end on a high," he added.

Other yearlings to shine today included Baramul Stud's Extreme Choice-Telepathic filly who went for $180,000 and Taghadoe Stud's Churchill-Blizzardly colt who is also heading to Hong Kong.

Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott secured a lovely colt by Farnan for their stable after teaming up with Bruce Slade's Kestrel Thoroughbreds for the Bound to Blush colt from Evergreen Stud Farm at $150,000.

Across the two days of selling at the National Yearling Sale (Book 1) some 249 lots sold at an average price of $41,434 to provide a gross of over $10.3 million - $2 million more than last year's corresponding sale. The clearance rate currently sits at over 76 per cent.

"I thought today was another good, solid day's trade," Magic Millions Managing Director Barry Bowditch said. "Obviously the $525,000 for Alma Vale's lovely Harry Angel colt to Manfred Man was an outstanding result."

"All in all to have a clearance rate of 76 per cent and a gross of over $10 million, which is well up on last year, and to have at least 112 horses sell internationally is a huge effort."

"It was great to see $1.7 million worth of horses to Hong Kong - a million up on last year."

"We have to thank our international agents and obviously David Chester for his efforts."

All up the National Sale has been branded a resounding success.

"We've been so pleased. From the weanlings which was an outstanding sale, through to the mares which was quite extraordinary with 24 million dollar plus lots and to the yearlings today and yesterday."

"Nearly $120 million worth of horses with almost 900 horses sold - it's an outstanding effort."

"We have to thank all our vendors for supporting the sale. The buyers who have turned up globally and domestically - to all of the staff who have helped the breeders out to get their horses here."

"And the efforts of the whole Magic Millions team has been phenomenal. It's a huge job putting on the National Sale and I'm proud of everyone for putting in a huge effort to put on the Southern Hemisphere's premier breeding stock auction."

"We are pleased we have been able to pull it all together again in 2025," Bowditch added.

Following the final lot being sold a special recognition was made to Magic Millions' longtime Marketing Manager Sales, Val Hayward who was working her final sale after 37 years of dedicated service to the company.

Val is retiring from her position in July and the entire Magic Millions team gathered for a photo in the sale ring to celebrate the milestone.
