Yulong Top Buyers List as MM National Mares Concludes

Media Release - Wednesday May 28

The beautifully related Group performer Call Di has topped the second and final day of the 2025 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale on the Gold Coast selling for $2.1million.

A Sydney winner and twice third at Group Two level, Call Di showed her ability on the track, but it's her pedigree that helped take her to the top today.

Call Di topped today's session for the Newgate Consignment selling for $2.1million.

Call Di is a full sister by Frankel to Group Two winner Miss Fabulass and is from the former Australian Champion Three-Year-Old Samantha Miss.

The Newgate Consignment offering ended the day as the top seller when knocked down for $2.1 million to Yu Long Investments (Australia) after a fierce late bidding battle with B2B Thoroughbreds.

Yulong's Sam Fairgray was delighted to be able to secure another member of a family they invested in heavily at the Strawberry Hill Stud Dispersal.

"It's good to be able to breed up a family and she's by a champion sire, out of a champion, her granddam’s a champion sire and she's in foal to a champion sire," Fairgray said.

"She's a lovely mare and I’m sure she'll leave a very, very nice Extreme Choice."

"On race performance, I followed her racing career and you probably didn’t see the best of her on the track."

"She had very, very good ability. They're two very similar types (her and Miss Enfield), so we'll get them back to the farm and foal them down."

It's no surprise that Fairgray and other members of his team are big fans of covering sire Extreme Choice.

"He's an amazing stallion. If he didn't have his fertility issues, he'd be a sensation."

"It'd be lovely if we get a couple of colts out of the three mares in-foal to Extreme Choice but the boss is very fond of him and we've got his dam at the farm at home as well, so we've got a few sisters to Extreme Choice."

Yulong also swept the second top seller of the day - the Victoria Oaks winner Aristia who was offered by Vinery Stud in foal to I Am Invincible. She realised $1.45 million.

"Once we saw her we knew we loved her," Yulong's Jun Zhang said. "She is in foal to Vinnie and has got a good first foal by Zoustar."

"Lonhro is a very good mare sire and (she is) the perfect suit for Alabama Express."

"She was on our first list. We are always searching for good mares."

Yulong were able to secure a number of high class mares to add to their incredibly strong broodmare band.

"We are happy now but it is a very strong market," Zhang noted. "This is a good thing for the breeders and the whole industry."

Lazzago sold for $1.4million - image MM

Group winning juvenile Lazzago is headed back to the farm she was bred at Widden Stud after selling for $1.4 million to RMA Bloodstock and Paul Frampton.

"It's a great result, obviously in foal to Zoustar," Widden's Matt Comerford said. "Super exciting mare, she was so quick, she ran in the Slipper and she got impeded when Learning To Fly hit the deck that year."

"She came back and she had the credentials of a mare well suited to Zoustar."

"She was actually bred by (today's co-buyer) Robert Anderson on the farm and we offered her as a yearling."

"There was a lot of interest in her and I think she was great buying, in fairness. I know it's a lot of money, but mares like her were making that yesterday but she's already in foal and on the way."

Across the two days of selling at the National Broodmare Sale over $86 million was traded on 356 lots sold at an impressive average of $248,088 and clearance rate of 77 per cent.

All up a staggering 24 lots sold for seven figure prices led by yesterday's sale topper Zougotcha at $5.25 million.

"I was delighted in today’s trade," Magic Millions Managing Director Barry Bowditch said. "Obviously the mares in foal market across the board has been a little bit discretionary so far this year, in my opinion, and I thought it was a very, very confident day's trade."

"At most levels it was solid bidding but at the top level I thought it was incredible."

"Ten mares in foal, that’s a big, big number for this sale – it's the second most million dollar mares we've sold at this auction ever."

"It was 25 the Shadwell year (2021) and this year, without a dispersal, to sell 24 million dollar lots, and 10 of them to be today, was a super effort."

"The average is up a huge amount – I think it's up $40,000 – that's massive."

"The gross is just volume related with the amount of horses we're offering here over the last two days."

"I think people that have trusted the system and trusted what Magic Millions have provided in the past have been very well rewarded."

Newgate had an exceptional sale that included Lilliesformillie (USA), who sold today for $1.3million.- image MM

"Newgate in particular, they've had an outstanding two day sale. They've sold around more 30 percent of the gross of the sale and I think Henry Field and his team having the confidence to bring a massive team of mares here, they've been rewarded in spades."

While Bowditch pointed out the strong support of vendors, the engagement from a large and diverse buying bench was a real highlight.

"Obviously Yulong are an incredible component to the industry globally, to the market globally, again today that was evident."

"I thought they bought some lovely mares in foal but what I’m most pleased about is, when you go through the top buyers this year, from half a million (dollars) and above there are so many names."

"There's a great cross section. Yes, Yulong were the leading buyer but just the depth in the market and the diversity was what pleased the team the most."
