Back in 2009, the most expensive mare sold in Australia was Champion 3YO Filly Samantha Miss, who was bought by John Singleton for $3.85million and today at the Magic Millions National Sale two of her daughters sold for $2.1million and $1.25million, both going to Yulong.
Earlier in the day Yulong purchased unraced I Am Invincible mare Miss Enfield for $1.25million in foal to Wootton Bassett (GB) in her first season at stud, read about her here.
Then later on they had to pay quite a bit more to secure Group II placed Frankel mare Call Di, who was offered in the Newgate Consignment with an extremely valuable positive test to Extreme Choice.
Call Di is a full sister to Group II winner Miss Fabulass, who was bought by Yulong for $1.85 million at the Magic Millions Strawberry Hill Dispersal in 2023 along with Samantha Miss herself for $320,000.
“It’s good to be able to breed up a family and she’s by a champion sire (Frankel), out of a mare by a champion sire (Redoute’s Choice), her granddam’s by a champion sire (Zabeel) and she’s in-foal to champion sire (Extreme Choice,” said Sam Fairgray.
“She’s a lovely mare and I’m sure she’ll leave a very, very nice Extreme Choice.”
Yulong have pretty much cornered the family of Samantha Miss, who was an outstanding filly winning the Group I ATC Champagne Stakes, Flight Stakes and VRC Oaks.
Her Group II winning daughter Miss Fabulass is already doing the job for Yulong and produced a filly by Diatonic (Jpn ) last spring and is now in foal to Panthalassa (Jpn).
Call Di didn’t quite have that level of performance, but she had multiple Group placings in elite company.
“On race performance, I followed her racing career and you probably didn’t see the best of her on the track,” Fairgray revealed.
“She had very, very good ability. They’re (Call Di and Miss Enfield) two very similar types, so we’ll get them back to the farm and foal them down.
“I think we’ve got enough (of the family) for now, but never say never.”
Newgate sold four mares at this sale in foal to Extreme Choice and Yulong bought three of them – Call Di ($2.1million) , Finepoint ($1.3million) and Ravisher ($900,000) with the only one they didn’t purchase being Duchess, who sold to Alma Vale Thoroughbreds for $500,000.
“He’s an amazing stallion. If he didn’t have his fertility issues, he’d be a sensation,” said Sam Fairgray.
“It’d be lovely if we get a couple of colts out of the three mares in-foal to Extreme Choice, but the boss is very fond of him and we’ve got his dam at the farm at home as well, so we’ve got a few sisters to Extreme Choice.”
Yulong purchased Extremely (dam of Extreme Choice) back in 2016 at the Inglis Broodmare Sale for $735,000, but she has not had a live foal since 2020.
