UK filly goes from stranded to longshot winner

Brad Waters - Tuesday August 8

Hours spent standing beside a motorway could have been a reason for a winner trading as high as 999-1 in a race in the UK on Monday.

Former Godolphin racing manager Simon Crisford had plenty of trouble getting Lawless Secret to the Windsor evening meeting, which was a factor in the filly's 250-1 starting price on Betfair.

Lawless Secret's price hit Betfair's 999-1 limit in running but she held on in wet conditions to win a 1m 2f maiden by a half-length.

Crisford told the Racing Post the filly had shown him enough ability to inspire confidence of a good run but the transport difficulties were the likely reason for a lack of punter interest in Lawless Secret.

"We've always quite liked her, and although I'm not saying we thought she would win we thought she would run well," Crisford said.

"But she spent much of the afternoon on the hard shoulder of the M11 after the horsebox broke down, and I suspect that's why she drifted so badly in the betting. Her work had been decent."
