Magic Millions Broodmare Sale-Toppers – Where Are They Now?

A star studded renewal of the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale will kick off next Tuesday (May 27) with glamour girls Zougotcha and Atishu vying for top honours, so we’re taking a quick look back to check in on some of the stars from the past.

Imperatriz was offered by virtual sale remaining in NZ where she was trained.

15 mares sold for $1million or more at last year’s sale with Imperatriz setting a record for a broodmare sold at auction in Australia when selling for $6.6million to Yulong, while the next highest was Platinum Jubilee, who made $3.5million to the bid of Coolmore, who also bought the third highest priced mare Madame Pommery for $2.7million.

Imperatriz was covered by Pierata, Platinum Jubilee went to I Am Invincible and Madame Pommery went to Wootton Bassett (GB) late in the season after missing to Snitzel.

The other two mares that sold for $2million or more were Chain of Lightning ($2.5million) bought by Yulong and covered by Pierata and Ruthless Dame ($2million) bought by Katsumi Yoshida and exported to Japan.

15 mares sold for $1million or more with the highest priced at $4.1million being Forbidden Love, who was bought by Yulong, followed by Sunshine in Paris, who made $3.9million when bought by James Harron Bloodstock for John Camilleri’s Fairway Thoroughbreds.

Forbidden Love went straight to stud and produced a filly by Alabama Express last year before going back to him again, while Sunshine in Paris has raced on and is now a $6million earner with three G1 wins to her credit including last Saturday’s Group I BRC Doomben 10,000.

She is likely to remain in training for another season with the lure of another crack at The Everest proving irresistible.

Two more mares sold for $3million or more.

Snapdancer ($3.2million) went to Yulong and produced a filly last spring by Diatonic (Jpn) before going to I Am Invincible, while Piping Hot ($3million), the dam of G1 winner Coolangatta was bought by Tom Magnier in foal to I Am Invincible and produced a filly from the mating. She then had a colt by Home Affairs last year before going to Wootton Bassett.

18 mares sold for $1million or more with the top lot Away Game fetching $4million when bought by Yulong, who also bought the second highest priced mare Tofane for $3.1million followed by Madam Rouge at $2.4million bought by Widden Stud.

Away Game has a yearling filly by Written Tycoon that sold at Magic Millions this year for $1.8million followed by a Written Tycoon colt and then last year she was covered by Pierata.

Tofane has a yearling colt by Written Tycoon that was withdrawn from Inglis Premier and then had a year off before going to Extreme Choice.

Madam Rouge was in foal to I Am Invincible and produced a filly (Rosie Rouge)from the mating that was sold at Magic Millions in 2024 for $1.7million and then produced a colt by Snitzel that was passed in at Inglis Easter this year. She produced a filly by Snitzel last year and then went back to I Am Invincible.

25 mares sold for $1million or more with Arcadia Queen topping the sale when bought by Arrowfield Stud for $3.2million followed by Melody Belle, who made $2.6million to the bid of Yulong and Mizzy, bought by Tom Magnier for $2.2million.

Arcadia Queen produced two colts in a row by I Am invincible, the first (Federalist) sold for $1million at Magic Millions and the second made $440,000 at Inglis Easter this year. She then missed to Dundeel and is now back in foal to him again.

Melody Belle had a Written Tycoon filly that was passed in at Inglis Easter then slipped the following year before producing a filly by Diatonic (Jpn) last spring before going to I Am Invincible.

Mizzy produced a filly by Wootton Bassett that sold for $375,000 at Inglis Easter then two fillies by Farnan and Snitzel before last year going to I Am Invincible.

One of six mares at that sale bought for $1million was Humma Humma, who was bought by Widden Stud and has made a flashy start to her stud career. Her first foal is stakes placed 2YO Price Tag (Zoustar), sold for $600,000 at Inglis Easter and her second, a yearling colt by Snitzel, sold at Magic Millions this year for $2.8million making him the highest priced yearling by his sire ever sold. She had a colt by I Am Invincible last year and was then covered again by Zoustar.

Six mares sold for $1million or more with the top seller Sunlight fetching $4.2million when bought by Tom Magnier with Yulong purchasing the second highest priced mare Unforgotten for $2.75million.

Sunlight has produced four foals in a row before missing last year for the first time. Her first foal was Justify (USA) colt Dawn Service, who sold for $1.4million at Magic Millions and is a stakes-winner.  She then followed with a Wootton Bassett colt that sold for 1.4million at Inglis Easter and had his first trial last week as Central Coast.

Her third foal is a Home Affairs filly that topped Magic Millions this year selling for $3.2million to Mitsu Nakauchida and is now in Japan and her fourth is a filly by Justify (USA).

Unforgotten has also had four foals. Her first is an I Am Invincible filly that was sold for $650,000 at Inglis Premier and named Anyone has had one unplaced start. She then followed up with two fillies by Lucky Vega (IRE) that were both passed in as yearlings and her foal last spring is a filly by Pierata. She missed to Alabama Express last year and then went to Written Tycoon on a very late cover.
