Starting as one of the outsiders in the 15 strong Listed Coolmore Denise’s Joy Stakes (1100m) at Scone on Saturday, the Chris Waller trained Written Tycoon filly Summer Flame continued her solid form to record her first black type victory for owners Rosemont Stud.
Having done all her prior racing in Victoria, the 3yo filly was yet to finish outside the top three in all her three starts, so it was a little surprising to see that she was unwanted in the betting.
Maintaining her unbeaten first up record, going two from two when resuming from a spell, the Waller trained filly was away well from barrier 3 with jockey Jeff Penza taking her along the rails where she travelled sweetly just off the leaders.
As the leader Overfull (Overshare) gave a little kick, Penza urged his mount towards the inside where she knuckled down really well to charge to the line to become the 77th stakes winner for Yulong’s Written Tycoon.
Coming late down the outside to fill the placings were the co favourites Gerringong (Blue Point) who finished just ahead of Thames (Lonhro), with leader Overfull holding on for fourth.
Representing the Waller stable was Assistant Trainer Charlie Duckworth.
"She is a filly who is a bit highly strung so we asked Jeff to look after her and just basically work with her and try to be as economical as he can with her," Duckworth said.
"She was a massive price but she came up from Melbourne where she raced for us last preparation with a bit of a wrap on her.
"She has performed well in all three starts down there. It's obviously a big step up into Listed grade but she was a slow developing type, which the Written Tycoons can be, and she has taken it in her stride."
"Rosemont will be absolutely delighted. Where she goes from here, Chris can work that one out, but very happy, we will take it for today."
Bred and raced by Rosemont Stud, Summer Flame is the first stakes winner out of the Group 3 Begonia Belle Stakes-winning Sepoy mare Divine Quality.
Rosemont Stud purchased the mare for $725,000 from the draft of Glastonbury Farms at the 2021 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale carrying Summer Flame, and interestingly, Widden Stud will offer her at this year’s sale as Lot 979 with an early September cover to Coolmore’s boom sire Wootton Bassett (GB).
Divine Quality has a 2yo colt by Zoustar named Augusta National in the stable of John O’Shea and Tom Charlton who is raced by the Rosemont Stud headed stallion syndicate.
Summer Flame is the 77th stakes-winner for Written Tycoon, who is listed as Private for the upcoming breeding season.
