Wootton Bassett Filly Wins G3 Musidora by Five

Tara Madgwick - Thursday May 15

A Group III winner last year at two, Whirl made every post a winner at York overnight when leading all the way to win the Group III Musidora Stakes (1m2 ½f) in a canter.

Trained by Aidan O’Brien and ridden by Ryan Moore, Whirl needed the run first up last month when unplaced at The Curragh, but has made rapid progress since then.

She stripped fitter for this assignment and relished the step up in trip to win by a commanding five and a half lengths.

Whirl holds entries for the Group I Epsom Oaks and the French Oaks with the latter seen as a more likely option.

"She's by Wootton Bassett, so you can kind of do most things. She was very comfortable stepping up to that trip today," said Ryan Moore.

"I thought she was impressive. She's very straightforward, she was always travelling nicely. She wasn't doing a whole lot in front but kept responding. I thought it was a nice performance."

A homebred for Coolmore, Whirl is the first winner for blueblood Galileo mare Salsa, a full sister to Group I winners The United States, Hermosa and Hydrangea, the dam of this Group I placed stakes-winner Wingspan.

Whirl is the fourth European three year-old stakes-winner for Wootton Bassett this year joining Henri Matisse, Swagman and Maranoa Charlie.

Wootton Bassett is slated to return to Coolmore Australia this spring at a fee of $385,000.
