Champion 2YO- What Do You Think?

Tara Madgwick - Thursday April 24

We’ve had four of the five Group I races in Australia this season for juveniles and each has had a different winner, so it was an obvious topic for discussion on our Tara Talks Racing podcast this week to speculate on who would be crowned Champion Australian 2YO – so what does the audience think?

Blue Diamond 1200m– Devil Night (c Extreme Choice)

Golden Slipper 1200m– Marhoona(f Snitzel)

Sires Produce’ 1400m – Vinrock (c I Am Invincible)

Champagne 1600m – Nepotism (c Brutal)

Below is a list of the previous horses to be awarded Champion 2YO and in years of the past when there was no clear standout the fallback position seems to be to give it to the Golden Slipper winner, but not always!

Microphone got the nod in 2019 over his stablemate Kiamichi, who won the Slipper and then never won again, while Earthquake got the prize in 2014 when Mossfun won the Golden Slipper.

Earthquake beat Mossfun easily on a good track in the Group II ATC Reisling before finishing second to her in the Slipper on a bog, while Microphone won the Group III ATC Skyline and was then second to Kiamichi in another heavy track Slipper before beating Loving Gaby and her to win the Sires Produce Stakes.

Broadsiding got the nod last year after coming late to the party after Lady of Camelot won the Golden Slipper and Manaal the Sires Produce. He sealed the deal in Brisbane winning their Group II BRC Sires Produce Stakes and the Group I BRC JJ Atkins, but this year’s Champagne Stakes winner Nepotism has gone to the paddock so does not have that opportunity to cement his reputation.

So we are asking our audience which horse should add their name to the list below?
