Akeed Mofeed Colt Impresses at Caulfield

Mark Smith - Sunday April 1

Progressive colt Sunset Watch kept the run of success going for Hawkes Racing in 2-year-old races with an impressive win in Saturday's Catanach Jewellers 2YO Handicap (1100m) at Caulfield.

A striking individual in the mould of his Hong Kong Derby winning sire Akeed Mofeed (GB), Sunset Watch was coming off a win at Ballarat at his previous start.

Goldin Farm's Akeed Mofeed has made an encouraging start to his stud career and he has no bigger fan than Sunset Watch's co-trainer Wayne Hawkes.

"We've got six, but I want about 16. They're really good horses to train, they've got really good attitudes, they lick the bin, they are a trainer's horse.

"What I mean by that is they just do everything you want them to do. I remember when the first half dozen got broken in by Julien Welch, he said that these horses are so quiet and so relaxed and to any trainers listening they know that's a big tick."

Hawkes said that Sunset Watch would now most likely be spelled after his impressive victory.

"It was a really good effort because he was caught three deep," he said.

Everyone says they only have to go around one corner but sitting three deep facing the breeze at Caulfield is never really where you want to be.

"If he drew barrier one and stacked them up he probably wins by seven, but he got the job done."

A homebred for Goldin Farms, Sunset Watch is out of the Snitzel mare Saramenha who was purchased by Goldin Farms for $260,000 at the 2014 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale.

A useful performer for Darby Racing, Saramenha won twice in Sydney and was stakes-placed in the Listed BRC Hampden Stakes.

She has a filly foal by Akeed Mofeed (GB) and was bred back to the son of Dubawi again last spring.
