Hiyaam Scales The Heights in Vinery Stud Stakes

Mark Smith - Saturday March 31

The Mick Price-trained Hiyaam came to Saturday's $500,000 Group 1 Vinery Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill Gardens with just a win in a Ballarat maiden to her name but she proceeded to grind her twelve opponents into the ground with a front-running special by Michael Dee.

Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Maktoum's homebred High Chaparral filly had earned her place in the field with placings in the Edward Manifold Stakes, Ethereal Stakes, Victorian Oaks and Phar Lap Stakes.

So a win at the top level was not out of turn and this was as emphatic as it could possibly be.

"Early I just wanted her to come back under me. Down the back she came back to me nicely, we got a couple of nice sectionals," Dee said.

The plan was to roll along and run them off their feet.

"After the line, I had trouble pulling her up and she ran another 1000 metres so bring on the (ATC) Oaks."

Hiyaam dam Mazarine has a million pedigree but Sheikh Khalifa's agent Tim Stakemire needed just $35,000 to purchase her out of the Coolmore draft at the 2011 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale.

She is a sister to Shower Of Roses who won the Vinery Stud Stakes (then known as the Arrowfield Stud Stakes) back in 2003.

Also, a three-quarter sister to the multiple Group 1 winners Octagonal and Mouawad as well as Don Eduardo and Peruzzi from the famed Eight Carat family, Mazarine's purchase price can be attributed to the fact that she had just one winner from her first six foals at the time of her sale.

That has gradually improved to two winners from four to race of ten foals with Hiyaam the obvious standout.

Mazarine's first foal, Game Dutchess (Montjeu), is the dam of the NZ Group III winner Exquisite Jewel who ran fourth in the Group 1 NZ Oaks and the stakes-placed Nordic Duke.

Hiyaam was born in New Zealand when Mazarine was exported with the Vinery Stud Stakes winner in utero.

She has a 2yo filly by O'Reilly named Faayza and a filly foal by Rip Van Winkle (IRE).

She was covered by Ifraaj (GB) last spring.

From the penultimate crop of the sadly missed High Chaparral, Hiyaam becomes the 112th stakes-winner and the 21st Group 1 winner for the champion son of Sadler's Wells.
