Geese That Lay Golden Eggs – What’s in the Future?

Tara Madgwick - Wednesday April 9

The 2025 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale was highlighted by 25 yearlings that sold for $1million or more which was seven more than last year when 18 were in the millionaires club following on from 26 in 2023.

Elite mares such as those in the table below invariably go to the best commercial stallions, so the covering sires generally reflect those elite stallions at the top of the market, but there are a few left of centre sires on that list chosen by some astute breeders.

Gilgai Farm’s Rick Jamieson breeds for the pedigree, not the marketplace, but in saying that has been well rewarded for his Extreme Choice colt from Ocean Jewel that sold for $1.15million. Ocean Jewel stayed in Victoria for her 2024 cover and visited Yulong’s Japanese bred Saudi Cup winner Panthalassa (Jpn), who stood at a fee of $16,500 and covered 112 mares.

Panthalassa (Jpn) was chosen to cover Ocean Jewel.

By Lord Kanaloa from a Montjeu mare, Panthalassa did not win a stakes race until he was four and hit career best form at five and six winning the Group I Dubai Turf (1800m), the race in which Romantic Warrior ran second in last Sunday and then the Saudi Cup on the dirt.

Nearly his entire book of mares are Yulong owned and they include last year’s Group I ATC Australian Oaks winner Autumn Angel.

Mo'Unga had the privilege of covering English last spring.

Newhaven Park got a $1million result with their Snitzel filly from their homebred Champion 2YO and 3YO Filly English and while she has a Dundeel colt to follow, they decided to keep her at home last spring. She was covered by Savabeel’s dual Group I winning son Mo’Unga, who stands at Newhaven Park and covered 88 mares in his first season at a fee of $27,500.

Below we’ve tabled all the million dollar yearlings with the foal produced last year by their dam and subsequent covering.
