Ka Ying Rising Brilliant Again In Sprint Cup

Craig Tompson - Sunday March 30

Hong Kong‘s champion Ka Ying Rising was brilliant again at Sha Tin on Sunday, winning the Group II The Sprint Cup (1200m) on his way to Champion’s Day and the much-anticipated Everest appearance.

Starting at the odds of $1.05, Zac Purton was aggressive from the gates but once clear of the inside runners, was happy to let an enthusiastic California Spangle cross him.

Upon straightening Purton gave him rein, cleared them in a few strides and coasted to the post as he’s done multiple times previously.

On the line he had beaten Helios Express (Toronado) by three lengths with Lucky With You (Artie Schiller) third.

The immediate target is the $HK22million Group I Chairman’s Sprint Prize on April 27 over 1200m where international runners will come for a crack.

Then all eyes will be on the Everest in October for the son of Shamexpress for which he is the ruling $2.50 favourite.

It’s the 12th win from 14 starts for Ka Ying Rising, the first, and only winner for Missy Moo who died in 2022.

She was a five-time winning Per Incanto (USA) mare and part of one of the most iconic families in the NZ Studbook, and one not noted for sprinting prowess.

She traces directly back to blue hen Taiona, the dam of Champion 3YO and Vic Derby winner Sovereign Red, Melbourne Cup winner Gurner’s Lane, with the family also featuring modern day superstar Mr Brightside.

Interestingly, Ka Ying Rising’s younger half-brother Ka Ying Glory made his debut on the same card.

Starting an odds-on favourite off some impressive trial performances, he finished 14th of 14.
