Capitalist 3YO Heading to $1million Provincial Championships Final

Tara Madgwick - Thursday March 27

Kim Waugh has done a super job with Capitalist three year-old Mogul Monarch, who has built an impressive record at the provincials and took that good form to Randwick to win on Wednesday ticking the 1400m box for the first time.

A last start second in the $150,000 Provincial Championships Qualifier at Gosford, Mogul Monarch carried 59.5kg in the Benchmark 72 event at Randwick and scored a determined victory for Anna Roper.

A modest $20,000 Inglis Classic purchase from the Valiant Stud draft, Mogul Monarch has the overall record of four wins and five seconds from 12 starts with prizemoney topping $200,000 and the best could still be to come.

“I thought he went super. He had to do quite a bit of work to get there, and they were going quite quick the first few furlongs, but at least we found out he ran the 1,400 well,” said Kim Waugh, who is looking forward to getting Mogul Monarch to The Championships at Randwick next month.

“He's in the Provincial Final for the Championships, so that was a good test today, the 1,400, so I'm very happy.

“We didn't know if he'd run the 1400– he's been 1100 and 1200 in all his races, so it was good to see him run a really strong one like that, doing quite a bit of work. We'll just have a nice time now until the final.”

Mogul Monarch is one of 31 winners in the past 30 days for Capitalist, who is running fifth on the Australian General Sires List by winners.

Bred by Segenhoe Stud, he is the best of two winners from Sierra Win, a daughter of stakes-placed Houston Benefactor from the family of Champion NZ 3YO Filly Princess Coup and Group winners Argentia and Thewizardofoz.
