It’s Time to Get Cracking

Tara Madgwick - Tuesday March 11

A lot of attention is paid to the first season sires table, but it’s the second season when things get really interesting for a lot of sires as we saw at this time last year when The Autumn Sun took off like a rocket and with four stallions in this cohort already siring G1 winners this season we’re taking a closer look at these guys.

We touched on the subject this week in our Tara Talks Racing podcast.

Too Darn Hot (GB).

Darley shuttler Too Darn Hot (GB) was the Champion Australian First Crop Sire last season and is going even better as his progeny turn three with four of his five stakes-placed horses from last season outside of Broadsiding returning at three to win stakes races…. Impressive!

His 10 stakes-winners this season is bettered only by Snitzel and I Am Invincible and he has a live hope in the Golden Slipper in unbeaten colt Rivellino.

Super Seth

The stallion that has really come into his own in the past week is Waikato Stud’s Super Seth, who has not one but two Australian G1 winners on the board in Feroce (Australian Guineas) and Linebacker (Randwick Guineas) and like Too Darn Hot, he’s also managed a good juvenile from his second crop with La Dorada winning the Karaka Million.

His lifetime 9.2% SW to runner is the best of all the stallions in this group barring Too Darn Hot and coupled with the emergence of Castelvecchio (also the sire of a G1 winner in El Castello) has shone the spotlight on Dundeel as a serious sire of sires.

Alabama Express and Exceedance have similar lifetime stats with the former represented by outstanding G1 VRC Oaks winner Treasurethe Moment and the latter by G1 placed stakes-winning colt Swiftfalcon.

The table below shows all second crop sires that have produced a stakes-winner in Australia this season and is sorted by lifetime SW to runner strike rate with a notable high profile absentee in Pierata, who has yet to post a SW in 2024/2025 season, but has 30 winners to his credit, so a SW is probably long overdue.

*Calyx (GB) and Omaha Beach (USA) shuttled to Australia for just the two seasons.
