Stylish Debut Win for Strada Varenna

Tara Madgwick - Friday February 28

With two wins and a second at the trials, the Bjorn Baker trained Strada Varenna has been a watch horse for sometime at Breednet and duly got the cash on debut at Canterbury on Friday night.

The daughter of Street Boss (USA) was done no favours with a wide gate, but Jason Collett rode her like a good horse and she fired across to lead and was never challenged, finding a neat change of gear to the line to win the 1100m maiden by two lengths.

“She’s always been an exciting filly. She drew wide and had to do a power of work and was still too good,” said stable representative Luke Hilton.

“We have a few options going forward, but we will see how she pulls up. The Magic Night (G2) might be a possibility of the Percy Sykes (G2) at the end of the carnival.”

Strada Varenna was a $100,000 Magic Millions purchase.

A $100,000 Magic Millions purchase for Newgate Bloodstock from the Emirates Park draft, Strada Varenna is the fifth winner from Group II winner Varenna Miss, a Group II winning half-sister by Redoute’s Choice to Group I winners Criterion and Comin’ Through.

Emirates Park sold the yearling filly by Tassort from Varenna Miss at Magic Milliosn this year for $260,000 to Anthony Freedman Racing/Julian Blaxland Bloodstock.

Strada Varenna is the third juvenile winner this season for Street Boss and the other two are stakes-winner Tentryis, who was second in last weekend’s Group I MRC Blue Diamond Stakes and Group III  placed filly Tempted.
