Broadsiding's Brilliant Return

Craig Tompson - Saturday February 22

Superstar three-year-old Broadsiding was back with a bang in a brilliant return effort to win the Group II Hobartville Stakes at Rosehill on Saturday.

Godolphin trainer James Cummings famously set the Too Darn Hot colt first-up in the spring to win the Group I Golden Rose over 1400m and the dose has been repeated in the autumn, although the Group One targets start with his next race, the Randwick Guineas.

Ridden positively by Zac Lloyd to sit much closer than usual behind a strong speed set by Mayfair, he loomed large at the 300 metre mark and imposed his class to beat Swiftfalcon (Exceedance) by just short of a length with Aeliana (Castelvecchio) third.

It was the third stakes winner on the day for the remarkable second season Too Darn Hot.

THE QUOTES

ong>Zac Lloyd on Broadsiding:

“He's very special, obviously, he's a very valuable colt to the team and yeah, he's getting better with age.

“Never in doubt, never in doubt. Once he'd begun like that, I had to give him a bit of a squeeze to just get in front of the runners underneath me, and once I got there, he just fell right back asleep.

“Obviously, Mayfair was making it a genuine 1400m for him first up, but perfectly prepared and yeah, he's just a very, very good colt.

“At the 500m, I just went through my gears, and he didn't really need it. He knows his job.”

Tyler Schiller on Swiftfalcon:

“I thought he was phenomenal. He gave the winner and best 3yo colt of the year a good head start but ran him down quite strongly. His last bit he was improving. Terrific return.”

Jason Collett on Aeliana:

“Really good run. Just struggled around the turn on the back of the winner who got away from us. But then late I was very happy with her.”

Kerrin McEvoy on Linebacker:

“He stepped a bit steady and I had to make a call whether to give him a kick or whether to ride him a bit more conservative which I opted to do. We were further back than I would have liked. Ultimately we weren’t that well placed. He’s run really well. Finished on strong through the line. A better beginning would have been beneficial today”

Josh Parr on Public Attention:

“I thought that was a sound effort. The winner’s turn of foot was just a little bit too good for us.”

THE BREEDING

Broadsiding is the lone runner from two live foals from the Street Cry (IRE)  mare Speedway, who made 11 starts for three Godolphin trainers, John O'Shea, Darren Beadman and James Cummings. She won at Wyong and Newcastle and placed a further three times.

Sadly, Speedway had only two colt foals before she died in 2022.

Her half-sister Flit (Lonhro) won the Group 1 MRC One Thousand Guineas, Group II ATC Light Fingers Stake, and Group III VRC Thoroughbred Breeders' Stakes, and her dam Glissade (Redoute's Choice) is a stakes-placed daughter of the Group III AJC Breeders' Classic winner Steflara (Zabeel).

THE FUTURE

Broadsiding is rightfully $2.20 to win the Randwick Guineas but Swiftfalcon, Aeliana, Public Attention and Linebacker were all good. Swiftfalcon particularly, who had looked to be going very well at the trials.

The Randwick Guineas may be problematic for them however if that’s their path, given they’ll have to try to the turn to tables on the winner, who looked as open to improvement as any of them pre-race.

A Melbourne trip might appeal to some.
