One to Watch – Ipswich

Tara Madgwick - Wednesday February 12

Zousain had a very solid Inglis Classic Yearling Sale with his progeny selling for up to $280,000 off a $22,000 fee and the affordable Widden Stud based son of Zoustar gave us a One to Watch on Wednesday.

Trained by Tony Gollan and ridden by Angela Jones, three year-old filly Zoufani was an impressive figure in the mounting yard at Ipswich in the 1200m maiden and she relished the slow conditions to power away for a very easy win.

Easy in the market, she showed abundant pace in the run and dashed away to win by nearly three lengths over the hot favourite Wynette, who will have to wait for another day to cast off maiden status.

“She’s one when I woke up to a Soft 7 I was happy. I really felt the track would suit,” said Tony Gollan.

“She a working project, she’s a big filly. We bought her as a private purchase, the team who bred her were a lot of our clients previously. We were happy to buy into her as a stable and its paid off straight away.

“She’s really been a long range project.”

Angela Jones is a fan of Zoufani having been on her in her first trial and now a race.

She’s a lovely big filly,” she said.

“I wasn’t worried doing a bit more. She wanted to go a bit keen and once I got half a length in front she really wanted that rail so I had to give her half a squeeze so she would be happy, and I was lucky enough she was fit enough.

“She’s a big girl and she’s going places.”

Zoufani is a smart winner for Zousain .

Zoufani is the first foal of Hollaback Girl, a metro winning half-sister by Your Song to Group I placed Amish Boy and stakes-placed She’s Our Star.

Widden Stud sold a yearling colt by Portland Sky from Hollaback Girl at Magic Millions this year for $95,000 to Laurel Oak Bloodstock and she produced a colt by Supido last spring.

Zousain had 17 yearlings average $97,353 at Inglis Classic and his top seller was a filly from Promada that made $280,000 for Goodwood Farm when bought by Nick Ryan Racing / Sharona King.
