Dundeel Filly Wins Virtual Match Race

Tara Madgwick - Wednesday February 5

With six scratchings from the field of nine declared for the first race at Warwick Farm on Wednesday just three runners went to the post, but it proved a good contest with victory going to the red hot favourite, whose trainer Matthew Smith believes she is headed to stakes class.

Dundeel filly Idle Flyer had won two of her previous four starts and looked well placed in the Benchmark 68 event over 1400m with her only serious rival the Written Tycoon colt Metaphorically, who chased her home last start for second.

He just couldn’t quite hold the filly off in the concluding stages with Zac Lloyd driving her to a half length win taking her record to three wins from five starts with prizemoney topping $114,000.

Matthew Smith expects Idle Flyer to excel over a little further at 1600m and will look to try her in stakes company as the autumn unfolds.

Idle Flyer was a $70,000 Inglis Classic purchase from Torryburn Stud.

A $70,000 Inglis Classic purchase from Torryburn Stud for Mathew Smith Racing / Randwick Bloodstock Agency, Idle Flyer runs for a big group of stable clients and is the best of three winners from well bred Street Cry (IRE) mare Progressive, a full sister to the dam of Group I winner Tom Kitten and stakes-winners Va Via and Promotions.

Not surprisingly Matthew Smith has also purchased the current yearling from Progressive, a colt by Russian Revolution that was snapped up from Torryburn Stud at Magic Millions for $75,000.

Progressive produced a filly by Tom Kitten’s sire Harry Angel (IRE) last spring and was then covered by Tassort.
