Star Debut 2YO Winner for Spirit of Boom

Tara Madgwick - Friday January 31

Queensland favourite Spirit of Boom is having a hot run with this juveniles this season and posted his eighth winner from 15 starters when the Chris Waller trained filly Karinska saluted at Canterbury on Friday night.

Ridden by Zac Lloyd, Karinska had one soft trial leading into the 1200m juvenile maiden and was easy in the market, but produced a brilliant finish from back in the field to win by half a length over the favourite Namaste, a talented colt by Savabeel.

Karinska was a $310,000 Magic Millions purchase for Star Thoroughbreds/Randwick Bloodstock Agency from the Redbank North draft and runs in the familiar purple and white stars that have been carried by so many top class mares in the Waller stable such as Espiona, Invincibella, Foxplay, Kiku and current stars Aeliana and Olentia.

Assistant trainer Charlie Duckworth had concerns that one lead up trial might not have been enough, but her natural ability got her home.

“The one trial was a concern and then she got cluttered up back on the inside and when Zac went back to the fence it didn’t look good ,” said Duckworth.

“Once she saw daylight she accelerated and went to the line untouched.”

Zac Lloyd was well pleased with the win.

“She’s a quality filly that will only keep getting better,” he said.

Karinska was a $310,000 Magic Millions purchase.

Karinska is the first foal of well bred Sebring mare Show Some Leg, a three-quarter sister-in-blood to Group II winner Bring Me the Maid from the family of Golden Slipper winner Polar Success and this season’s Group I ATC Flight Stakes winner Lady Shenandoah.
