Brando stars as Caravaggio flops at Deauville

Darryl Sherer - Monday August 7

Three horses touted as candidates for The Everest later this year failed in Sunday's Group I Prix Maurice de Gheest (1300m) at Deauville as Brando triumphed for England.

The Kevin Ryan-trained Brando travelled sweetly under Tom Eaves to halfway before accelerating into the lead 200m out, going on to defeat Acclaim by a half length with Tupi a further 1 1/4-lengths away third.

Everest possibles Caravaggio, Signs Of Blessing and Bound For Nowhere finished unplaced.

Signs Of Blessing led past halfway but was unable to quicken and finished fifth while with Bound For Nowhere also raced on speed before weakening to finish 10th of 13.

Caravaggio proved the biggest disappointment. Blindfolded into the barriers he was never travelling and Ryan Moore was hard at work passing halfway, beaten 4 1/2-lengths into sixth.

Trainer Aidan O'Brien told the Racing Post the three-year-old is likely to be rested.

"I don't know really what happened, maybe I ran him back a bit quick after Newmarket," O'Brien said.

"Ryan (Moore) said he was a bit quiet in himself. We know what he's capable of, but maybe I should have taken more time.

"I don't know what's on or off yet, but he needs a bit of a rest."

For Ryan however, the race was a triumph. The Yorkshire-based trainer had to shut down his stable completely in early June for several weeks after one of his horses tested positive for Equine Herpes.

"It's a great day. We're delighted with the horse," Ryan told the Sporting Life.

"He ran a good race in the July Cup and he'd tightened up since. He got a great ride and he was exceptional today. We'll look at Haydock (Sprint Cup, September 9) next."
