Expensive Too Darn Hot 3YO Now A winner - Half Brother at Easter

Craig Tompson - Wednesday January 22

Too Darn Hot’s most expensive colt from 2023 is now a winner and on his way to larger targets after Shanwah broke his maiden at Morning on Wednesday.

By Too Darn Hot out of Lady Sayyida, Shanwah was given a good ride, tracking the leaders by Blake Shinn who made an early move before the turn and the Ciaron Maher trained three year-old sustained his effort to beat Belle Detelle (Zed) by 1.3 lengths with Ongatiti (Sweynesse) third.

“An expensive yearling. He’s bred to stay,” said Maher stable representative Jack Turnbull.

“Long term I’d say Brisbane would be his go.

“He was a slow burn. Hasn’t known what to do for a long time. He had the potential but been a work in progress.

“Looks like we’ve got a nice racehorse on our hands.”

“He’s a little bit quirky. Still a work in progress,” said Shinn.

Shanwah was a $750,000 purchase for Cameron Cooke Bloodstock from the Trelawney Stud draft at NZB Karaka Book 1.

Shanwah was an expensive yearling.

That made him the most expensive colt for this sire that year and he remains his second most expensive ever behind the $1.9 million A Time For Julia colt from last year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast.

Alas for the owners, gelding was required after his two start initial preparation, however it’s obviously brought something to the table.

Shanwah is a half-brother to Group II winner Excelida, out of Iffraaj mare Lady Sayyida, a half-sister to the Champion racehorse Ocean Park and also to the dam of Group I winner and sire Grunt and Group II winner Zayydani

His half-brother by Per Incanto is being offered by Trelawney at Inglis Easter as Lot 20.

It's the 31st season winner for Too Darn Hot who leads the Second Season Sire tables by both money and winners.
