Tricolours Racing very nearly got to the Magic Millions 2YO Classic in 2023 with speedy Written By colt The Novelist and may well get there in 2025 with The Playwright, a filly by the same sire in Written By.

Trained by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott and ridden by Regan Bayliss, The Playwright was well prepared following two good trials and was ultra professional when making her debut at Rosehill on Saturday to take up the lead from an outside gate.

She led all the way in company with Wootton Bassett (GB) colt Gallo Nero, but proved a tough nut to crack and held on to win the 1100m dash by a neck over last start winner Icarian Dream with expensive $1.9million Zoustar colt Fermoy hitting the line hard for a close up third with Gallo Nero fourth.

The Playwright was a modest $60,000 Magic Millions Book 2 purchase from Newhaven Park for Tricolours Racing & Syndications Pty Ltd and runs for an all ladies syndicate of owners.

Similar connections had a great run with Written By colt The Novelist, who won his first two starts including the Group III BRC BJ McLachlan Stakes and was favoured for the 2023 MM 2YO Classic before being withdrawn due to an injury which ruled him out for the remainder of his juvenile season.

The Playwright will hopefully have a smoother path to the big race at the Gold Coast and Adrian Bott believes she can get there with another start likely in the latter part of December.

Bred and sold by Newhaven Park, she is the fourth winner from four foals to race from Sugarparma, a stakes-placed Snitzel mare from the family of Group I winner Rubitano and stakes-winner Rubitoff.

The Playwright was a modest $60,000 Magic Millions purchase.

Newhaven Park will offer the yearling half-sister by Xtravagant to The Playwright at Magic Millions 2025 as Lot 1397 and Sugarparma produced a colt this spring also by Xtravagant.

The Waterhouse Bott stable have had some luck with Written By having also prepared his Group II ATC Silver Slipper winner Straight Charge and the G1 winning son of Written Tycoon is well represented at upcoming sales with 11 at Magic Millions and 14 for Inglis Classic.
