NZ Derby on the Agenda for Tasmanian Derby Winner

Mark Smith - Friday February 9

The New Zealand Derby at Ellerslie on March 3 has been pencilled in for the Darren Weir-trained Civil Disobedience after the son of Raise The Flag (GB) romped home in Friday's $150,000 Listed Schweppes Tasmanian Derby (2200m) at Hobart.

Sent off an odds-n favourite under John Allen, Civil Disobedience enjoyed the run off the race behind the leader and had the race won shortly after turning for home.

His stablemate Wolfendale plugged on resolutely to claim second, beaten two and three-quarter lengths, with Pennstock a half-length back in third.

A $32,500 purchase by J Foote/ D Weir from the White Robe Lodge draft at the 2016 South Island Yearling Sale, Civil Disobedience advances his record to 4 wins and 4 thirds from 10 starts with earnings of $212,390.

"He's very progressive and had the form on the board," Allen said

"He had a big weight but he was always going well and just needed a bit of luck on the corner. Once the gap presented he really sprinted and won with a bit of ease.

"I'm not really sure what Darren has in mind for him, maybe the New Zealand Derby in three weeks but I'll leave that to Darren and the team."

From the family of Melbourne Cup hero Bagdad Note, Civil Disobedience (pictured as a yearling ) is the fourth winner from as many foals out of the 6-time winner Pernote who is a daughter of the Mr Prospector stallion Personal Escort (USA).

Civil Disobedience becomes the fourth stakes-winner for White Robe Stud's royally bred Sadler's Wells stallion Raise The Flag (GB), a once-raced half-brother to Banks Hill, Heat Haze, Intercontinental, Cacique, Champs Elysees and champion stallion Dansili out of Juddmonte Stud's wonder mare Hasili.
